Unfortunately, on this date, he had officially passed away from this fatal wound. Then his Vice President Chester A. Arthur succeeded him as president at the time. President Garfield had an assassination attempt on his life just 6 months after he was elected president. He served nine terms in the House of Representatives and is still today the only sitting member of the House of Representatives to go on and become President. Chester A. Arthur was an American Lawyer and politician where he served as the 20th Vice President and the 21st President of the United States.

At the time this was the longest-built suspension bridge in the entire world. The Brooklyn Bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. It was also the first bridge to use steel as the cables for the suspension bridge. This was such a huge engineering feat that it became a National Historic Landmark by the United States National Park Service. The bridge is 1,595 feet long for the span and was the longest bridge in the world until 1890.

The Statue of Liberty's full name is the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World. It was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as the universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty is made out of copper and you might be wondering why it is green then. The reason is that when copper oxygenizes and basically "rusts" it turns to the famous green color that it is today. Back in the day, it cost the French people over $100,000. For its voyage over to the United States from France it was broken down into 350 individual pieces and was packed into 214 crates.

The United States obtained the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam from this conflict as well. Spain was also able to get its independence from Spain during this war. During this conflict, the United States also annexed the independent state of Hawaii. This war allowed the United States to establish prominence in the Caribbean region in order to pursue its strategic and economic interests with Asia. The war between the US and Spain was inspired by the three-year-long war between Cuba and Spain where the Cubans were fighting for Independence from Spain. The spark under the US to join the war came from the US battleship Maine exploding and sinking in the Havana harbor under mysterious circumstances on February 15th, 1898.

He was giving his speech on the topic where he was reconsidering his views on the tariff policy. The shooter was said to be Leon Czolgosz and he shot the president twice while the gun was still hidden in his handkerchief. He was the 25th President and was serving from 1897 to 1901 when he was assassinated. He became the third US president to be assassinated. There was a record-breaking crowd size of 116,000 people as he was one of the most popular Cheif Executives in Decades. He was on his second term and was following a huge win of the Spanish American War.
