I've been using Google Docs in conjunction with Screencast to give feedback. The feedback is verbal after they have written - it means they receive an emotional response and can hear their work read back to them - v powerful - one child said he'd never heard his work written and changed some lines as I read them differently to how he imagined. Children now using as home learning to feedback to each other - peer learning

CS you can switch the auto correct off - this still underlines the word but this is no different to us doing it in the book afterwards. They can still just right click and change the spelling - Not sure of a way around this other than to tell them not to. As for handwriting - could they copy up in neat afterwards?

I agree with CS about handwriting. Copying up afterwards seems pointless. they are also not practising writing and thinking at the same time - this is an important skill

I love using Google Docs. they seem to write much more. We've been using a sample with comments as the Guided write so the chn can refer back to it and see why we wrote what we wrote. They are more likely to edit in books and they write more. I like being able to comment in real time and the chn just change things when they are ready without interrupting their flow. Some of th kids don't pay attention to comments however - also is there any way to print the comments when we stick in book as this will save loads of marking time!!!

PS and JR
I am not sure about the writing and processing at the same time -this is more for note taking and that study was on nshaky ground. They found that because typing is much quicker people were able to njust copy down what the person was saying blindly so not processing anything - it wasn't the actual act of handwriting itself, more that the notetakers weren't thinking for themselves - we can the this on a computer of with handwriting. As for handwriting, I am aware that children need to be able to write a 3 hour exam when they are 16 and have handwriting that is legible -- this is not likely to change soon but I wonder if focusing on handwriting in english is the best use of our time as it means we lose so much other learning, skills and functionality for teachers and kids. Could we embed the handwriting somewhere else? Maybe in foundation? I am not saying people don't need to be able to handwrite but I am saying this can't be at the expense of more important skills that have been outlined by organisations such OECD

Google Docs makes it much easier to feedback for the kids as well. WE edit in threes and the kids take it in turns to log into each other's work and discuss as a three and make suggestions against the success criteria. It works really well. Best way of editing I have found and much more important skill than handwriting.
