Screening for Reading Disabilities by Krislyn Daniel

This padlet will discuss the various methods used inside CMCSS to screen for reading disabilities. These screeners are just the beginning stepping stone; CMCSS employees are not qualified to give any diagnosis. These screeners are intended to help identify struggling readers so that educators are able to provide them with supports that could help them be more successful in the general education setting.

The aReading screener is a computer administered, adaptive screener that measures broad reading ability and predicts overall reading achievement. In the video, you will see a step by step walkthrough of how to find a student's score once they have completed the screener. Please note in this video the user speaks of "Clever," this is a site similar to Classlink which CMCSS uses. When viewing the scores you will find the student's range score; percentile rank for class percentile, school percentile, district percentile, and national percentile; whether they fall in the high risk, some risk, or no risk categories; and skills they have mastered, are developing, and future skills.

The AUTOreading screener is a computer administered screener that consists of 8 subtests. These subtests measure the accuracy and rate of phonological (sound), orthographic (spelling), and semantic (meaning) skills. This screener can be used in grades K-12. When used for screenings, some subtests are taken together meaning students may not take all 8 subtests in a single setting. The video attached includes a brief overview as well as a student view of the FastBridge AUTOreading assessment. The AUTOreading scores come in 2 forms: composite and subtest. Composite scores generate an overall score from all screeners. The subtest scores generate a raw score of each individual subtest. AUTOreading scores can be found just as the aReading scores were in the previous section, however you will select the autoReading tab rather than the aReading tab. Similar to the aReading scores, when viewing AUTOreading score you will be able to find the student's range score; percentile rank for class percentile, school percentile, district percentile, and national percentile; and whether they fall in the high risk, some risk, or no risk categories.

The CBMreading screener is a curriculum based measure of a student's oral reading fluency. CBMreading is used in grades 1-8 and can be used to further monitor students progress throughout the school year. In this screener, students read 3 grade level passages aloud for 1 minute. After completing the timed reading for the 3rd passage, students are asked to complete reading the story and are then asked to recall any information they rememeber when they have finished reading then answer 10 comprehension questions provided about the story. The recall and comprehension questions ONLY apply to the 3rd story, students should not be asked to recall any information about the first 2 stories. CBMreading scores are then created by averaging the words correct per minute. Similar to the previous screeners, this score can be found by selecting the student in the CBMreading tab on FastBridge. The score then tells the screener the average words correct per minute, the accuracy of which the student read, and if the student is at high risk, some risk, no risk, or on track, the screener can also then see which words the student missed while they were reading. The attached video shows how to administer a CBMreading screener.
