I've always known that to be safe is not growing, not allowing you to go to your full potential. We need to get out of our comfort zones and explore, do new things to grow. We tend to become too comfortable, and not grow as a person, learning comes through taking risks at doing things that we've never done before, through making mistakes we are learning and knowing how to better ourselves at it, for eg, we've all made mistakes in life that we regret like stealing something, or not studying for a test, but that guilt in return made us grow because of the situation..

Making excuses for something you did wrong also wont get you anywhere, own your mistakes an learn from it, in doing this you will become a better person, things will go right for you, because now you are fixing it, you have learnt. We are not perfect but it doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

This article I found very insightful and also something I can relate too. I've found that when something is not comfortable in a learning environment we often resort to saying "that's not for me." A personal experience is having Xhosa as a subject last year, which required skill and practice, but yet it became so much comfortable to continue.
Therefore I can conclude a large part of learning is accepting being uncomfortable and working towards being comfortable.

This article perfectly highlights what is wrong with the education system today. In school we give and receive grades based on memorising rather than discovering and figuring things out with the guidance of teachers. Teachers have been downgraded to just make learners repeat the same thing over and over again and in return learners who are labelled as smart are just those who have a good memory. All reativitylc has been stripped off the learning and teaching process and those it's depriving all learners of a fruitful educational experience

This article had a particular eye opener for myself and many others. Many times we feel as if we need the help of others to survive. Referring specifically to the education sector, this article reminds us and bluntly states in so many words that we should not be dependent on someone else. We should be reluctant and dependent on our own skills and our own knowledge. As Nelson Mandela quotes when he said, "Education is the most powerful weapon ONE can use to change the world". Taking this into consideration, we now know that we should rely on our own knowledge and not depend on anyone else. We should soar like the eagles that we are and that way we can all make South Africa a better place for all .

Being literate doesn't only imply that one needs to be highly educated. There are those that are quite literate but are what we call street smart. In order to stay literate we simply need to constantly be aware of changes and be open to change. It is through change that we learn new things. For example, there are many teachers who were never taught how to integrate computers into the classroom but due to the world and its technological evolution, those teachers had to adapt to change and with that learn how to survive with that change.

The text and video highlights the core problem in the education system not only in South Africa but around the world. Its easy to say "all you need to do is simply step out of your comfort zone" not realising how difficult it is to in fact do that. For example, how often have we as students gone to campus, sat in class, got an assignment, and told ourselves "I'm going to start on this assignment as soon as possible" but before we know it the assignment is a week away from being due and basically nothing has been done. Stepping out of your comfort doesn't only need self motivation but motivation from other around us. We as teachers need to teach outside our comfort zones in order to motivate learners to work outside their comfort zones. Again, change is key and being open to change. Same, as in my illiterate comment, I make a point of saying that we do not learn if we do not accept change.

The video gives a description of the two kinds of people. There are people who loves to take risks and there are those who are not willing to leave their comfort zones because of a fear of failure or fear of the unknown.People who are not willing to leave their comfort zones never grow and realize their fullest potential.People who are not willing to leave their comfort zones remains average and never achieves extraordinary results.I have noticed that there is a difference between the poor and the rich ,the great and the small, mediocre people and excellent people.Rich, great and excellent people are those who have resolved to leave their nest in order to fulfill their dreams and rise to greater heights.Rich, great and excellent people values personal development for growth. They love to try new things and explore. The video informs us that being an Zoo tiger or a jungle tiger is a personal choice. You can choose to be a great teacher or mediocre teacher. You can chose to settle for less or you can choose to dream bigger, think bigger and do more more.Leaving a Zoo is a condition and requirement for excellence and greatness.

I agree with Mr. Shemane that most of us share similar points on what being illiterate is in the 21st century. Being illiterate is not just not knowing how to read or write, but having the inability to "learn and unlearn". Therefore, we as future teachers need to constantly implement computer literacy and adapt to the changing technological era in order to equip ourselves to teach better with the aid of technology in classrooms. I also noted that over the years the skills most students and myself acquired through the teaching of computers in education made it easier to grasp the attention of learners in schools with the use of technology in the classroom that was maybe not implemented by their teacher thus, making it easy to reach lesson outcomes.

What are we doing to be literate? That is a question most think they know the answer to, but in all honesty we are merely just surviving in the ever-changing technological world. Some will try to improve their reading and writing skills whereas some will move along with the trends technology sets for us such as those on social media. But does that make us literate? Yes and no, because in the 21st century we learn to adapt, implement and promote whats hot and whats not.

214128601 WindellBeing literate means that it was possible to read this blog post. A literate person is someone who is advanced at reading, writing, communicating and learning. What goes hand-in-hand with being literate, one also needs to have competence and knowledge. I have come to understand that in todays day and age, being literate is and requires much more then only reading and writing. What I am doing to be literate is to develop relationships with others and solving problems. Gain knowledge with tools of technology. Being able to analyse information. Share information simultaneously on different platform while being an effective communicator. I think that the most important thing for me to be literate is to be a lifelong learner. You have to remind yourself that you are never too old to LEARN.

The sad reality of our current generation is that we live in the digital age. Technology was intended to make things easily accessible but ended up brainwashing our children. I say this because to be literate, is to fully be able to read, write and comprehend a particular language. However, social media has a language of its own and smart phones auto-corrects in correct spelling. Which unfortunately puts our kids 10 steps backwards because they cant read, write or comprehend proper English. So, to answer the question as to what are we doing to be literate, i say that we have to adapt to technological changes because English is a language that is constantly changing and modifying

As future teachers we should encourage learners to participate within the class and read more materials. That is the only way that we can move up the literacy rate within the schools. Learners are often to lazy to learn and relearn what they have learned to others. In other for them to became a master of what they have learned they should try and explain it to other learners that way they will be more literate.

It is shocking how many people in today's society are illiterate! and society seems unbothered about it , it is sad but true. That is why education systems were put in place to help us become literate, However, poverty stares us dead in the eye learners drops out of school and cannot read and write properly going out to find jobs that pays out a minimum wage/salaries and this affects their living standards heavily in the future! So what I suggest an encourage my fellow being to do is always at least have a desire to be a life long learner, critical thinker as well as a problem solver! To be literate is imperative in the 21st century
!

This article reflects on learners that downgrade themselves even before they have attempted anything yet. They label themselves in that way and are very sceptical to partipate within the class. I have been one of those learners in school and when I go out on teaching practice I would get one or more of those learners in the class. With the help, support and encouragement from teachers they can eventually overcome that fear and excel in their work. And for them to become more sufficient they would ultimately have to practice the work at home in order for them to become more self- assured.

Someone also mentioned the role that social media play in the lives of learners. They implement what they learn on those sites in their lives and therefore can be seen as "illiterate". The education system plays a vital role in overcoming these strains in our education system

The video is insightful and made me realize that being spoon fed all the time is not good for your development as a person or similarly being in your comfort zone all the time. I think the fact that every learner is following the same curriculum and need to do the same work is basically putting a child in a cage. Being limited to do what you good at or consist of characteristics of something can't be explored. Not every child is academically strong and are being forced to learn the same as others and doesn't allow the child to show his/her full potential. Enabling the child to live out his/her full potential will make a huge difference in the development process of a learner.

I found this very insightful and helpful. As people and aspiring teachers we need to get out of our comfort zone and do things that isn't necessarily in our comfort zone. For example using kahoot in your classroom or during a lesson, you might not be comfortable with using kahoot in your classroom but at the end of the day it could benefit the learners and you would also grow in the sense of using more technology in your lessons.

I also feel that this was helpful because individually, at a time, I was very comfortable in my comfort zone and never wanted to move out of it until I realized there was no growth, no growth as a person. I started doing things I would never have found myself doing. I feel we need to encourage one another to do things that will help you grow as a person

Although it is the 21st century, illiteracy remains a detrimental problem because of poverty, a lack of resources, a continuous cycle of illiterate parents raising illiterate children and social media. By now the majority of the world should be literate but I believe that the internet and social media has made people lazy and less willing to read actual books or even open a dictionary. Therefore, I remain literate by using the internet to do online reading via Kindle and Wattpad and I purchase books regularly and in turn donate my unused books to school libraries to motivate others to read more.

"He is illiterate"...."That student is economically or computer illiterate" So the definition to the term illiterate may sound simple and clear. Yet, the concept is still not fully grasped by many. It goes beyond the inability to read and write. Let me use the example above - "The student is economically or computer illiterate". This in fact means that the student is perhaps able to read or even write but does lack knowledge of computers or the subject economics. In others words being literate means being equiped with not only writing and reading skills but also knowledge in general. So the following questions may arise
1) What exactly leads to someone being illiterate? Having parents who are illiterate themselves, learning disabilities, poor living conditions which makes it difficult to access reading/writing material.
2) What are the main effects of being illiterate? Such individuals battle to function their daily lives for example trying to sign a form or even reading a contract or any other piece of information, socially such individuals usually withdraw themselves and cannot participate in any working activities, economically this means lack of unemployment as well as low growth levels.

To answer the question -What are you doing to stay literate? Like the saying goes you never to old to learn. I also remind myself daily that learning is a process. I therefore try to read at least one book once a month which I will either physically buy or download directly on my cellphone. Books of different genre e.g fiction, non-fiction, educational, romance, politics etc. This helps me to continue learning new words, pronounciation, places, people and many more. I then try to stay up to date with modern technology which allows me to read news from news apps, gain knowledge about other countries, school subjects, teaching curriculums and methods as well as life in general by doing research, collecting quotes, going onto social media sites and watching youtube videos

The above article and video to me personally is beyond educational. Firstly, this is great material to help steer any class of learners or students to a successful year whether it be academically or sports. It can also serve as a great motivational tool in businesses or any other working environment for that matter. Lastly, it can be used to inspire both young and old in the general life.

All the aspects which the article and video refers to are aspects which I can relate to in so many ways. For example; Growing up, I was never fully computer literate and this made me built fear, trying to avoid computers at school or even typing a task. I was given a label by teachers "she cannot do math" I then adopted that label and believed it and with no surprise, I ended finding math challenging up until grade 12.

Even as a 4th year student, the video made me realise that many of my personal, spiritual and academic goals seems "unrealistic/not achievable, "to good too be true" kind of goals. This is only because I limit myself by giving myself lables and believing the labels. I prefer to be in environments (teach subjects, sports, talents, even friend groups) which I am most familiar to and comfortable doing. I now know that learning will always be challenging but worth it. In my opinion, I 100% agree and say that the video and article is extremely educational. In terms of learners setting goals, dealing with the added challenges of those goals but more importantly achiveving those set goals. I am definately going to share this video with my teaching mentors, during teaching practise and children in my family who are still scholars.

Great minds do think a like...Reading the comments made me realise that most of us has a mutual idea and understanding of the concept - illiteracy. With this being said, it makes it easy to distinguish between being literate vs being illiterate. After expresssing my views (comments) I also noticed that a lot of the student has touched on similar points as myself regarding illiteracy. A lot of us including myself has steered away from illiteracy in SA in the 21st century but rather tried to answer the required question.

In terms of the video and article, it is clear that the students have all been greatly motivated by the main message which conveyed. Many also agreed that it is indeed no mediocre educational tool. A few people have however failed to answer the question and explain how they would perhaps use it a classroom situation.

I firmly believe that many or rather all students themselves are motivated for the acdemic year ahead, future career and life in general.

Based on the comments which I have read about the tigers, most of them are in agreement. It is interesting to read different peoples opinions, points of view and stories of how stepping out of their comfort zone helped them prove others wrong. I agree with the comment "Espin" made that "parents these days are forgetting that they are their child's biggest and most important teacher in life." Everybody in a child's life is responsible for their education not only educators. What we do or how we respond or react when they are being challenged or wanting to give up has an affect on their views of themselves. This may result in a child wanting be either the Zoo Tiger or the Tiger in the Wild.

Can't believe how true this quote is. Like the quote says in this day an age you're become more illiterate if you do not continue to learn. Which I feel is what's happening to me. With the ever-changing world, we have to continue to educate and inform ourselves. Like most of you guys have mentioned, with technology advancing, we have to adapt to these new trends. And by educating ourselves, for example doing courses, we can better ourselves into becoming literate.

There were no words. So I had to learn that form of literacy. Also, we spend hours on the internet reading news, blogs, etc. And we adapt to people's style of writing. Each day we are presented with new, fresh information. If a child is able to read or identify a sign, he/she is not illiterate. You can say things without actually saying anything. I used to make associations with colour to remember things as I grew up. I think we neglect different types of communication too easily as we think reading and writing is the only form of being literate.

Reading was introduced into my life at a very young age. My mother would always be reading books and I would lay by her side and page through a magazine. I would make up my own stories with the pictures that was shown - even though I could not hold the magazine the right way around. Being Afrikaans and growing up in an Afrikaans home, I have always understood the importance of a universal language. A language in which all people could communicate. Books are how I keep myself literate. I read and take note of words which I do not understand and then I look them up in the dictionary (yes very old school). I also enjoy reading magazines and newspapers from time to time. Linking my way of staying literate to the above quote, I often watch the news on television or listen on the radio to stay up to date with what is currently going on around us in the communities and the country. I attend as much extra classes and workshops that are made available to me in order to ensure that I am constantly learning and growing as a human being.

The quote that was attached is one powerful quote and had me thinking that with the 21st century being Illiterate is no longer a big of a deal because it already is no longer a big deal, where as if one gives it thought in a technological context, the world changes day by day where technology is concerned and each day new things are discovered and created. Some people are illiterate where reading and writing is concerned whereas others are more literate where technological things are concerned and visa versa. In the context of an school environment teachers are opt to try and reach through to learners in different forms where it’s the normal pen and textbook method or via digital gadgets.

With the question posed of what do I do to stay literate?
I still read books whether its myths, fables or research. I still prefer an actual book over something that is in electronic form. I try my best to stay up to date with new forms of technology that develops each day even though it is a given that we will never always be up to date with technology. As a computer applications technology educator in the making, technology will always have to be my number one priority.

You might even step back from being an introvert to becoming a vibrant person where you picture yourself filling with light and confidence. It is not always easy BUT it isn't always a bad idea. Try something new until you are comfortable with discomfort and give yourself a reward for venturing even slightly outside of the box.

PS. HAVE A POSITIVE MIND SET:)

It goes further than possessing those basic skills. One needs to be able to change with the times and adapt to these changes rather than letting it hinder your growth.
I do not like change very much and this has been a challenge for me..Taking computer literacy for example, I am computer literate and i agree that computers make life a lot easier, however my comfort zone is a pen and paper. I've really had to push myself to get out of that comfort zone and especially when working with younger generations , i feel it is extremely important to be able to adapt. One needs to push and keep growing and advancing with society and its changes.

And only there after you can explain the word and meaning of illiteracy. Criminal activities and extremism is also a product of illiteracy. It also leads towards unemployment and slow economic growth in our community and country. It is something that can be fixed with help.

Wow, Wow Wow!!!!All of this is just amazing and very informative!! I remember my sisters son used to say to her " mommy i don't understand mathematics"
We as future teachers should know that not all the learners are the same. However we should always see that learners don't label themselves. Learners should always be motivated and to be told to never give up easily. Learners need to get out of their comfort zones and get the right mindset to be the best.

The video is also very much inspirational and educational. Plain and simple, we need to get out of our comfort zones to experience the wild and learn the best. Sometimes people get so caught up in their comfort zones that they are afraid of getting out of that zone. That hold them back to pursue their potential. Getting out of your comfort zone will not be easy, however you can adapt with time to the situation. You will get stronger, and you will learn to face challenges in life. The video makes it quite clear that when you stay in your comfort zone you will never really grow to your full potential.

The article was very insightful and interesting. Having been on teaching practice on several occasions and observing this behavior of learners labeling themselves as not good enough, I could this relate to the article. From my teaching practice experiences, I would say that many learners use this excuse of not being good enough as a way to avoid having to work in class or trying to learn by challenging themselves. I believe learning takes place when learners succeed in challenging themselves and stepping out of their comfort zone. This action allows learners to acquire new knowledge and skills.

The era that we are currently in is filled with different disabilities compared to the past. If you cannot read or write there are measures put in place to help you to succeed in these areas. To be literate in this century you need to be able to fully adapt to any of your surroundings with an open trained mind.

I definitely agree with the above quote. We normally associate illiteracy as the inability to read and write where in actual fact it is the inability to learn. What I mean by this is, if we cannot train the 21st generation that learning needs to take place before anything else then we have already failed. Critical thinking and reasoning is what leads to actually learning. We need to question everything around us even if it's subject matter and in such a way we will learn through the answers that we derive from the questions asked.

Watching this video has actually opened my eyes to the reality that we as educators are facing. In the schooling system we are training learners to be tigers in the zoo by spoon-feeding them, having them follow a routine and by cutting all of them with the same knife. Every learner has different learning styles and different views in content learning and the only way I can change this as an educator is to manage my learners each according to their needs and train them to become tigers in the jungle-although the road may be difficult they can be assured that growth will take place and that they will become independent beings (in school and in life outside of school).

As we all know that literacy goes a long way, therefor the ability to read and write will never be enough to educate and liberate one's mind. I fully agree with the statement and note that I will do whatever it takes to be literate that includes setting a target of literature to read and redo projects that I have done before just to make sure that I can relearn and unlearn those that I don't find useful for my self development.

I've read the text and watched the video at the same time, i have found out that both text and the video are giving us some very good insight, knowladge and importance of thinking outside the BOX. In high school when i was doing life science we talked about the 'SURVIVAL OF THE FITEST' whereby all the animals that always try to reach the top food on the tree they get much chances to survive than those who depends on the lowest food on the tree. So in this regard it is paramount important to always Gain new life skills which are essential to being able to meet the challenges of everyday life in our daily basis. Being open-minded as a young educator can also have the benefit of opening doors to unexpected experiences, which can ultimately take your career in a new direction.

Instead, why not try magazines at first, or graphic novels? Or pick up a book of short stories - read in small, easy to digest bits at first.

To be honest in the past I would reading as I wouldn't find it interesting but as I grow older Ive realized how important it is to understand 'literacy' and as a soon to be teacher in the classroom you can see that there are many learners who struggle to read and write but we should never give up on them. So I tend to go more often to the library to take out books to read , I would read the newspapers, read online news oh and practice my spelling too.

Thank you Mr Moyo for sharing this inspirational and motivational video with, highly appreciated. I found this video very educational. Also, this video goes hand in hand with my philosophy of life which is "adapt or perish". As aspirational and soon to be teachers we need to teach our learners to learn to adapt, not only to survive but to be successful in whatever career they choose.
