I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised on the portrayal of Shaun Murphy. Something the immediately struck me in the beginning was how Dr. Glassman was talking to the panel and defending Shaun by stating how his differences are not negative, but are strengths in several different ways. This hit home for me, because I feel a lot of people are focused on their limitations, but need to look at how their unique abilities are also strengths. Another area that I thought were nicely developed into the story was his sensory descriptions, such as “the rain smelled like ice cream”. Shaun’s social differences, something that a lot of my students struggle with, was also well developed into the story. Overall I really enjoyed the show- Sara

Beautifully described, Sara. I was pleasantly surprised that the writers focused on strengths and emphasized that Shaun was able to feel empathy his own way.

I have to agree with Sara. I was surprised how well they portrayed weak areas for individuals with ASD in Shaun. I think when people hear Autism, they immediately think of non-verbal and stimming. I love the positive twist on this show to give the viewers some insight on all the capabilities for individuals with ASD. The biggest challenge Shaun will face will be proving he is a good doctor, despite differences. I do think all doctors are treated that way in the beginning, but unfortunately Shaun has to prove he is a good doctor because of obvious external differences, not just his medial abilities. I do have to say, props to this show for making the medical AND Autism aspects pretty accurate.
-Kayla

I was amazed by the first episode! It portrayed real life situations that I know happen to individuals with disabilities. Throughout the series, I am going to assume Shaun will have to prove his worth and overcome negative comments and stereotypes due to having autism. I loved that it showed his vulnerabilities and how they were dealt with.
