The Devil's Highway is an unpleasant path that migrants go through to get to their idea of the "American Dream." It has been told that the path is haunted and spirits lurk the path. For example, chupacabras, the plants itself, La Llorona, demons, and etc. It is known as a path of deaths due to many countless deaths. In this chapter we learned about the first recorded death Melchior Diaz. He died by accident trying to throw his lance at a dog and ending up striking himself. Leaving him there to rot and die from the inside out for three dreadful weeks. This is the first KNOWN recorded death which has a high probability of more bodies dead within this pathway. We also learn that there are cairns placed and border patrol puts them down sometimes to lead the migrants to them. In all if you walk this path everything is coming for you to see your final result which is death.

This part of the chapter talks about the struggles of migrants traveling and seeing border patrol. Usually, migrants are frightened because they think they are rangers and are there to shoot them in the head, rape women, and drop them handcuffed into canals. A group of men known as the Vidrios Drag did the opposite and went to find border patrol. They were very dehydrated and in bad shape. They were found by Agent F, Mike. He finds out how important the situation is and knows how he has to act by saving lives and recovering bodies within the pathway. The border patrol also often refered to the migrants as 'wets" or "tonks."

Even though Agent F aka Mike found the Vidrios Drag group in general the amount of bodies that lie beneath this trail is a lot. So much to the point border patrol would look and walk by it because it will be a lot of paperwork to cover and identify who the human being was. One of the big causes of death is by sunlight, hyperthermia. It also talked about how border patrols communications where weirdly placed. Where the shotguns would be placed in the back and out of reach from violent migrants coming their way. Also communicating where you can accidently press the button and be singing a song and not realize.

The citizens within Veracruz are going through a vast decrease in their economy which is leaving them poor. Some citizens take action amongst themselves and take the risk of going to America. One thing that stood out to me was one of the destinations they wanted to go to was Orange County which we are located in. They rely on Don Moi to help them. He is appealing to the eye because he is fat, has gold jewelry, and has Americanized cars. Don Moi is a really big jerk but offers the price of 20,000 pesos which the citizens don't even make in a year. So, Don Moi offered a discount of 13,000 pesos to walk through the desert. This is the start of his plan and threatened them if they didn't pay back the debt by tracking down their families. As of now, 6 people signed up on the roster to risk their own living situation to what they think will be placed in a better living situation soon.

Migrants that are passing cannot physically comprehend what the sign says, so it is no use. We learned how you cannot have an individual business of putting people through the border. The coyote business is very organized and usually family ran. If you decide to you will basically be scalped and have a bullet in your head. There are many connections within the coyote community, so it is impossible to get by it by yourself.

This chapter is important to show that people that made the effort on the walk are brave. It shows how dedicated they were to achieve the "American Dream." Not everybody should go unknown beneath the world especially with a case of one of the largest groups to walk through the desert and over half are dead. We also learned individuals goals as to why they wanted to go to America it saddened me truly that they were never able to achieve that ideal dream they wanted.

Rita Vargas helps the walkers. She is a very strong-suited woman and does everything in her power to go against Mendez. We also learned about the dead bodies lined up together and descriptions of what they had with them. We read Mendez's sorry letter he wrote which in some parts was sincere, but most was basically just kiss a** moves. Things aren't looking good for Mendez now and the rooster is going to get punished even worse since he is in Arizona. As well as how long the import of illegals have been going on.

The 14 bodies took their first plane ride back home for their funeral that was placed. The government made it seem like they cared by placing bands etc.. in the funeral. Which was ironic because the government didn't put any money towards the community for their poverty they are stuck in. We are also faced with Mendez being tried for his case. Where he plans to place the blame all on the border patrol which failed. He came to his senses and realized that he will have to face and plead guilty with what deep situation he is already in. Luckily for him he will stay alive in jail for at least 16 years.

We learn the survivors of the walkers are allowed to stay in America and are given the opportunity to work in a meat packing plant. We also learn that Mendez gets sent to jail. This helped the relation of Mexico & US become more communicative within each other until 9/11 hit and everything dropped and security tightens up again.

We learn that the new safety towers, water stations, and emergency centers slowly popped up after the Yuma 14 situation. We also learn that the people that work at the morgue misidentified their race as white. Urrea took steps into explaining that these people actually bring more to the economy than they take from it. Their is a lot of costs and money being dealt with in this chapter especially when we learn that undocumented immigrants owe taxpayers over $55,000 each. Which isn't always fond of since it is a ridiculous amount of money. This is still a big issue that remains as of today.

This part was the reflection part by the author. We learn that a women got kinda upset about the paths that have been exposed, but he also gained a bond with the border patrol agents. He has talked about the maximum security within the border even though the numbers trying to get to America has decreased. People apart of the coyote immigration groups also are very violent still where many accounts on rape and sexual assault towards women. Where we also see that they take mothers children last minute and make them work to pay for their child to come back to the US.

The end.. the author talked about the relationships he gained in this book. We learned the actual name of Agent Mike F, Dave Fagan. Don Moi came to the town to try to steal all the properties and the women, but the widows were strong and gathered young men and beat up Don Moi. We also learned the nephew of Reymundo Barrera Mururi said it was a Metizo last name. The author was mortified, but also very apologetic. His nephew made the same journey, but the difference was he made it and got a Ph.D. The author learned alot about wirting this story and I believe he does have huge respect for what the border people do.
