The travelers Denis and Francis had a "Letter of Introduction" given by a warlord so they could safely travel through Afghanistan. They also had to learn the difference between gunshots of war and celebration because there is a war currently going on in some middle eastern countries including Afghanistan.

This passage was and still is very mountainous and cold. They used skulls as land markers.

Marco Polo seemed to have a similar experience as he was kept captive in Khan rule for 17 years around current day Beijing, China. Both groups of travelers weren't welcomed but in different ways.

Both groups of travelers saw Idols of the Gods the natives worshiped when in Indonesia.

In modern day, it is not ruled the same as it had many years ago. Denis and Francis agreed that the people in Iran were the nicest group they traveled to on the entire journey.
