Rising Action: He learns his friend, Mr. Wyatt, brought a oblong pine box that has a weird shape and odor. He become curious at it and tries to discover what is inside.

Climax: The ship is caught in a hurricane. Everyone is trying to escape of the lifeboat but Wyatt refuses to part with the box. He goes back to the ship and ties himself to the box with a rope. He ends up dying to try and save the box. 

Falling Action: The people continue on their life boat to shore, wondering what had made the man jump after his box.

Resolution: A month after the accident, the narrator learns that the box had the corpse of Wyatt's recently deceased wife. Wyatt was going to bring the body to her mother.
