One day that I came into observe Ms. Terry, she was administering a quiz to her students on the book that they have been reading. I did not realize all that teachers have to think about when creating quiz for a class... even when it is simply on a couple of chapters for a book. I asked Ms. Terry how long students will have to take the quiz and she took me through some of her thought process. Since the day was Friday, and the students had their Fun Friday experience, class time was shortened to about forty minutes. This meant that students would have about 30 minutes to take the quiz after using ten minutes to settle down and have a quick before-quiz independent study session. After this, Ms. Terry had all of her students clear their desk and put away everything but a pencil

Before the assessment each student was handed an answer sheet that that the quizzes could be re-used. I was happy to see that the answer sheets were not scantrons. This makes sense because the quizzes were not very long at all. I think my reasoning behind me being glad about not having the scantrons was because it meant that students were not only being assessed through multiple choice.

Ms. Terry gave me a copy of her quiz to see exactly how she was assessing her students. Again, the quiz was on chapters 21-25 of the book Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool, a book of about 300 pages. The quiz consisted of several parts. Part one was reading comprehension which was multiple choice questions with four options for each question. The second part addressed characters, symbols and objects in the book. This section was fill in the blank followed by clues and hints to help remind the students. The third part was vocabulary matching. The words included their definition and the word itself. Part four was an extension of the assessment of vocabulary. This part was completing the sentence with context clues. The students could have used part 3 as a word bank to help them remember the vocabulary words they were tested on, which was a total of six words.

I feel as though Ms. Terry did a good job with assessing her students in multiple ways. She had multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank and context clues on her quiz. She also informed me that, the day before, students were prompted on what they will be quizzed on. They also had hints on what kind of questions might be asked in regards to reading comprehension. Overall, Ms. Terry guided the students through the chapters of the book for the most part, so the quiz acted as a way for students to prove their participation in reading and paying attention in class.
