The meaning of this quote is that a person is at fault to their own mistakes. If no one else is involved then they are the only one at fault. Edward uses this to let people know that intention means a lot. A mistake a person does is something that sticks with them and they are at fault in the first place. This implies Eternal punishment because it is their fault for the sin and that they should be punished for it.

The meaning of this quote is that a person that commits a sin should be at fault and fear of what is coming next to their future. Edward uses this to put a fear into people that commits a sin that they will face the eternal fire of hell when they do.
