Goal 1) Vibrato

I have been working on vibrato since the end of the fall semester and have a goal of being able to fully achieve it soon. Systems-What I can do in order to accomplish this is to continue working on the specific exercises and worksheets my instructor gave me. An exercise I use consistently is four vibrato pulses per beat, two beats in a row with a non-pulsed half note at the end up and down an entire scale.

Intonation is a technique I need to improve on in order to better perform repertoire. This is usually seen as I tend to let the pitch go flat whenever I hold out a note longer than a beat or two. It tends to also occur when even playing a quarter note at times.
* Systems- I can play with a tuner in the background to see which notes tend to fall or rise in pitch, such as scales or long tones. After seeing which notes are over or under, I can continue doing long tones to improve intonation.

Another sort of long-term goal is expanding my repertoire. I plan on applying to four-year colleges later this year and this would be a huge assist. Although my list is not as long as it could be, I'm sure I can work towards accomplishing this goal.
*Systems- Some methods I can use to do this are expanding my library and improving on my other goals. By learning vibrato and better intonation, there are some pieces that I can play as those are key components. I can also work on multiple pieces simultaneously to add more pieces to the library.

We started this lesson with the topic of needing to join the second semester theory classes. Professor Fabiero was very helpful with this topic and assisting me in getting a better schedule. After figuring out the class dilemma, we started working on exercises I have had since last semester. I did my long tones with the first time forte, second time piano. I need to continue working on this but with a tuner to see how my pitch is throughout the exercise. We also did vibrato, something I started late last semester. An exercise for this is to use vibrato for four notes per beat for two beats before simply holding it out for two, up and down a scale. Prof Fabiero also gave me thirds and arpeggio sheets to work on, starting with GM and DM (90 bpm). The last thing was another packet she made with exercises in them, I'll work on high register 1 & 2 this week (kincaid).

We started this lesson with long tones, focusing on the importance of having a tuner to check your pitch throughout the exercise. She also shared how I could do intervals with a drone on a tuner as well, (1,3,5,8). We continued thirds by adding A and E major. I need to work on isolating difficult sections to improve on them. We did the same with the arpeggios. I should continue to work on those and figure out the chords to help figure out the notes. We added some more melodies on the kincaid packet as well. Professor Fabiero also gave me my jury piece for this semester, Flute Concerto in G major, Op 29 by Carl Stamitz. I need to do research this week as well as have the first section ready to be playable.

This week I focused on G major and D major in both of these exercises. I was also given a packet of exercises in which I focused on one called high register #1 and 2 (Kincaid). The average time of my practices session was 45 minutes.
I practiced everyday of the week with the exception of Wednesday and Sunday.
Some obstacles I encountered were starting the apreggios and thirds. I got the understanding of it after slowing them down and asking some questions about them.

This lesson was started with me using my long tones to warm up. Some notes I was given were to have a greater forte sound and that I can do this exercise by ascending and descending. We also went over my thirds and scales with met. I was told it would help more if I did my scale, followed by thirds, and then my arpeggios. We added BM this week and also reviewed the past assigned ones. I need to go back and do my thirds in the higher octave as well. Professor Fabiero also gave me another page out of the packet she printed, it's a melody meant to be played piano and graciously. We also went over some topics of music education and how I should start researching more into it. We finished the lesson by going over Stamitz. I did well this week and need to focus on the details of the runs as well as adding more of the piece to be playable.

This week’s practice time was averaged at 50 minutes.
Saturday at 8am- I practiced at home for fifty minutes. I started with long tones with a tuner on to check my pitch throughout my exercise. I also worked on my apreggios, including the newly added AM and EM. I was also given some melodies from the Kincaid packet. Those were for pitch as well as high registers. I also began to do research into concertos as well as beginning the first three lines of Stamitz.
Sunday-3pm, 45. On Sunday, I worked throughout the same goals as the previous day but kept working on Stamitz. I kept working on the first three lines and began to slowly move towards the next two lines as well. I focused on EM a bit more than the other scales as I had some difficulty with some fingerings as I kept missing D sharp.
Monday, Wednesday- 7am, 50 minutes. I got to school early both of these days before my first class to get some rehearsal time in. My routine stayed consistent and I moved towards more of the middle section of Stamitz. I am having some trouble with some of the runs, which I need to slow down.
Tuesday, Thursday- 4pm, 50 minutes. As I continue to establish a consistent practice routines, I continued the practice schedule I made this week. I made it to the established point in the jury piece although I still needed more work on the runs.

Saturday at 8am, 50 minutes- As usual I started with my long tone exercise to continue checking and improving on my tone. I then moved to my routine of doing a scale, the thirds, and then the apreggios of it. I continued to review and work on the upper register of them as well. This week's new scale to tackle was B Major. I was also given a new melody from the Kincaid packet which is meant to be played graciously and piano. I worked on learning the notes here as well as the rhythms.
Sunday- 3pm, 45. I worked on the previous exercises with focusing more B Major as I struggle with some note changes in the apreggios. I worked on Stamitz today with continuing to work on the assigned section as well as some of the difficult rhythms.
Monday, Wednesday- 7am, 65. I put in some practice time before and after music theory. My routine is consistent as I continue to only change what piece I am focusing on more. I continued to work on my jury piece as I have to start working with a piano accompanist soon. There were some measures that were tricky and in which I used time to figure out.
Tuesday, Thursday- 4pm, 50 min. I repeated everything I have done prior and spent some time going over the apreggios a bit more as I have trouble getting both my high C and high C# out. I am still working on those as I focus on getting the packet tune with better concentration.

I added Gb Major to my scales this week and began working on it immediately. I focused on the lower register first to learn the notes correctly. I then worked on getting the rhythms and working with a metronome on the same melody from the packet. I stayed on the same bpm for today for both the melody and Stamitz.
Sunday- 3pm, 50. I started with the same routine with focusing more on Gb Major and B Major near the end. I then worked on Stamitz by focusing on learning the correct notes and rhythms by starting at 54bpm.
Monday, Wednesday- 7am, 65. I continued the previous routine followed by both Stamitz and the melody as I continue to go up the bpm on both. I also isolated certain runs that I had difficulty with so I could learn them correctly.

My first inspiration is someone I was just introduced to a few weeks ago. Jean-Pierre Rampal was a French flutist who was active from 1940s to 2000, when he died. I did not know much about him until researching him for this assignment. He is credited for bringing the flute back as a solo classical instrument. I have been listening to his playing to take notes of his techniques and emotion in all his recordings. I have been also following his recording of my jury piece this year, Flute Concerto in G major, Op. 29: I. Allegro. I admire how he balances articulation, phrasing, and vibrato throughout the movement. I hope to add these to my playing by continuing to practice but with more focus on these techniques. https://youtu.be/48Ag-_BE1QI

Another inspiration of mine is also one I first heard of a while back. Flutist Gareth Davies was invited to become Principal flute with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2000 at the mere age of 23. His playing is a great balance of various techniques. He has played for soundtracks such as Star Wars. The recording of his that I have been listening to is linked above. You can hear the intonation and shape even from the get-go. The beginning of the waltz has such amazing colors. To incorporate these wanted techniques, I need to practice them while maintaining everything else. I should record my playing to see where I can add/fix certain dynamics as well as phrasing. I hope to use this to add depth to my music to take it beyond hitting the right notes and articulations. https://youtu.be/TYlsCGhIvcg

She graduated from Julliard with a BS in 1963 and later became the first American to win first at the Geneva International Music Competition (1966). She has played throughout various countries such as the U.S and New England. Her playing in this video is truly motivating. She uses great dynamics while maintaining the shape and color of the piece as well. I need to start practicing this in my everyday playing as well. I need to think and research my pieces, with what I want to convey and how. https://youtu.be/yAbZ3mx2-rk

I had some trouble with a couple rhythms and accidentals so we went over some methods that I could use to practice more efficiently. I am staying on the same melody for another week to do better progress on it for our next lesson. I also need to become more comfortable with practicing and playing with a metronome instead of trying to speed up or slow down. Stamitz was next on our list as we went over the assigned section. I am going to continue working on this by starting at 54 bpm to ensure I learn the rhythms and notes correctly before starting to speed up. I can also practice the sixteenth notes slurred so I can get them in the correct beats before switching to the correct articulations.

We began this lesson as usual with long tones as a warm up. We reviewed the arpeggios and thirds from the previous weeks and added Db Major to the list. Karen brought up open-mouth staccato, where you open your mouth as a fish would to let the sound ring more. She gave me an exercise to use to help practice this technique. We continued to work on this for a bit before moving onto my jury piece. I need to practice my rhythms more. I can sing them, write the counts, and then play it to help emphasize the counts before I actually play them. I will also work on taking the tempo up from 62 to 76 bpm.

Saturday at 8 am, 45 minutes- I began my practice with my warm-ups, as usual, long tones, and scale patterns. I also added the open-mouth staccato exercise to my list this week. As I practiced my scales, I began to learn and practice my Db Major scale. The thirds took a while to learn at first while the arpeggios were a bit easier. I also went through Stamitz as I wrote down the counts through rhythms that I had trouble with. I counted them after with a metronome at 62 bpm, I then fingered along before moving on to playing them.
Sunday- 2 pm, 50. I warmed up for the beginning part of my session. I spent more time on learning the upper octave of the Db Major scale thirds. I took a slow tempo to ensure I can learn them correctly. I also worked on the staccato exercise before working on keeping the same tempo on Stamitz to try to speed it up next time.
Monday, Wednesday-7 am, 60. I warmed up first with my long tones and scale patterns. I started to speed up my Db Major scale on Monday and my Stamitz piece on Wednesday. I also isolated some runs that I had trouble with in my jury piece.
Tuesday, Thursday- 4pm, 45. These two days were a continuation of the day before them. Tuesday was continuing with Monday's goals and Thursday with Wednesday's.

I have been continuously working on Carl Stamitz’s Flute Concerto in G Major, Movement 1 this semester. I have come a long way with this piece since March. I have the stylistic and vibrato sections coming along very well! I still plan on getting better breaths and phrasing beige juries. I also plan on getting the sixteenth notes throughout the piece to have more clarity and volume! I know I can do it and I hope you enjoy my small snipet!

This week's practices were very similar to the previous week as there was no new information to go off on. I did continue focusing on the second and third page of my jury piece while continuing to work on the first one. It was difficult as there were various rhythms I was struggling with throughout the new pages. I tried to learn them while maintaining the same style of the previous page. My other half of rehearsals mirrored the previous week.

This lesson started as usual with my long tones before going to my thirds and arpeggios. We reviewed these before adding Ab Major to the list. Karen mentioned how I should start memorizing them as they will be my technique jury. We went over the new exercise from the last lesson, the open-mouth staccato. It is still something to use and work on to help get the sound to resonate. We went to Stamitz after where Karen recorded some audio files for me to listen and follow along to. I also asked about some rhythms I was having difficulty figuring out. We are leaving out the last page of this movement as it is a cadenza and I am not at the level of playing that yet. There is still some good work to do with the overall piece and the sixteenth notes.

Saturday at 8am, 45 minutes- After starting with my usual routine, I spent some more time with my thirds and arpeggios. I added my Ab Major scale and reviewed the previously assigned scales as they need more work. I then went and separated the difficult rhythms from Stamitz to focus on them. I had the slow these down quite a bit to get them correct at first. I did not speed up these rhythms it any of the pages overall as I am not consistent at this tempo yet.
Sunday, 2pm, 50 min.- I spent more time on the second octaves of my thirds and arpeggios as I tend to fumble with them. I also went through my open-mouth staccato exercise to help get more resonance and tone. I went through Stamitz where I got to work on keeping the rhythm consistent while trying to maintain the same volume and energy. I had to work through most of it slurred to ensure the volume stayed the same.
Monday, Wednesday- 7am, 60. After starting my routine, as usual, I went to spend some time listening to the audio files that Karen recorded for Stamitz. I listened to them a couple of times while I followed along to make sure I wasn't missing any rhythms or notes. I also separated those sections before going through the entire section without pause. This was helpful but also difficult to do at first as the piece is one that requires lots of support.
Tuesday, Thursday, 4pm, 45. These days are usually a similar routine to the previous two, however, I did start changing it a bit. I spent more time playing the whole and half notes in my piece to see if my tendency is to be flat or sharp, which is flat. I can fix this by using more air support as well as rolling out my head joint. I continued to play my piece with air support in mind.

After starting with my long tone warm ups, I went through my previously assigned scale from the last lesson. Karen also randomly selected some previous scales to ensure I am still working on them. I still need to memorize them while working on keeping them up to scale. I got assigned Bb Major this week. We then worked on the last page of Stamitz specifically. I can work on getting this page better by slurring all the sixteenth notes to ensure all the rhythms are on beat. But also to check if I am missing or skipping any notes throughout the runs. I also need to work with bigger chunks with the met to get used to playing throughout the piece. We also briefly went over double tonguing before the end of the lesson where Karen gave me an exercise to start using for this.

I had Bb major this week, which I spent some good time on as I struggled with the arpeggios. I went through the last page of the jury piece with a slower tempo while slurring the sixteenth notes. I also started working on the double tonguing exercise but took it slow at first.
Sunday, 2pm, 50 min- Sunday was similar to the previous day. There was no change in schedule, just the tempo getting bumped up a bit.
I had a family emergency this week, and I could not practice again until Thursday. I won't dive into this much.
Thursday, 3pm, 50 min.- After missing some days of rehearsal I was determined to make some good progress. I spent some good time with the last page of Stamitz, focusing on getting the sixteenth notes even and steady. Although the tempo is not where I want it yet, I wanted to ensure that I had consistency and support before messing with the tempo. I also went through the previous pages to make sure I hadn't lost anything during the main focus of the third page.

I still need to work on the upper octave thirds on the Bb Major. I got assigned an etude to work on some more. This etude is in G Major. It still needs a great amount of work so I will continue working on this for the next lesson. Stamitz also needs work with the melody, specifically in bigger chunks. The sixteenth notes are at 82 bpm where I will start bumping them up slowly.

After beginning like usual, we went through multiple scale patterns as I still have to memorize them all. I also need to start adding shape and volume to them. The etude still needs more work but is coming along. I need to add more contrast with smooth and staccato sections throughout it. This will add more depth and character overall. I went through Stamitz at the same tempo as I need to keep it light and avoid rushing. Karen recommended I record myself to hear what I am and what I am not doing. I also need to work on singing and playing scales together at the piano to develop more ear training as well as hearing the intervals.
