What are some of the most common ways social engineering affects cybersecurity?

Social engineering affects cybersecurity because once hackers have manipulated users to provide their personal information, they will use that information to gain access to an individual, or entire comany's, accounts or systems. These types of threats are some of the most common ways that cybersecurity is threatened, human error is exteremely hard to protect against from a technical perspective.

What can we do to help prevent attackers from leveraging social engineering for their own benefit?

According to the TEDx talk with C. Hadnagy, one of the easiest ways to prevent a phishing attack is to wait before responding to an email or text that asks for personal information (and seems to invoke an emotional response). I like this tactic because there may not always be an obvious way to identify a phishing attempt. We have seen articles in our weekly discussions related to phishing attacks that come from a verified source, to most people this would be impossible to detect.

Phishing - Cyber attackers use emails as a way to manipuate people into providing personal information. These emails will typically include something urgent or important so that it triggers an immidate emotional response. Things such as billing issues or winning a raffle will prompt a user to react quickly.

Vishing - Similar to phishing, but with voice calls. Examples of this can include hackers impersonating technical support or even impersonating kidnappers threatening familly members. These are also often things that invoke an emotional response that prompt people to react immediately.

SMSishing - Similar to phishing, but with text messaging. Hackers will often impersonate someone familiar or a business that will ask for personal information via text.
