In a lot of Portuguese families, it’s common to gather close
relatives to spend the Christmas Eve together. During dinner time,
the dishes that are often served are turkey, codfish (bacalhau)
with potatoes, octopus or roasted goat.
Some families with small children start opening their presents
before midnight strikes, but for the majority, the tradition dictates
that the gifts are opened at midnight (the 24th to the 25th of
December).

On the actual Christmas day, Portuguese families gather once
again to have lunch, which normally is piglet or other dishes
named before. For dessert there’s a big variety of sweets – from
“Sonhos” (a fluffy Christmas pastry), to “Bolo-Rei” (a kind of sweet
bread with eggs, filled with nuts, dried fruits, raisins and topped
with candied fruit and powdered sugar), gingerbread cookies,
Christmas biscuits, “leite creme” (a Portuguese Egg Custard),
Portuguese Rice Pudding and many more.
In families with small children, it’s also common to have a family
member dressing up as Santa Claus to distribute more presents
to the little ones.
