The Outback or Bush was something uniquely Australian in the 1800’s and was very different to European landscapes. The ‘Bush’ was associated with bushrangers, bushranging was a very popular option for those who wanted to escape the harsh conditions of being a convict and live off the land. The Bush was also seen as a source of survival and nourishment not only from the Indigenous but also from the convicts. The European Australians saw the skills of the Indigenous people to be miraculous and legendary.

‘Australia’ was previously called ‘New Holland’ by the settlers. Mattew Flinders circumnavigated Australia and published his findings in a book called ‘A Voyage to Terra Australis’ and in this book he uses the name ‘Australia’ many times referring to the continent. His book also helped boost the popularity of the name ‘Australia’ a lot. Governor Macquarie suggested that they use ‘Australia’ to describe the continent. This event is a huge symbol of Australia’s identity because its the first time that the name ‘Australia’ was used by the people as the name of the continent .
