I chose this image because i understand the role that plants play in creating fossil fuels. I work around diesel engines and they require grease, oil, diesel fuel, and other various lubricants all made from petroleum. The petroleum being a bi-product of the decomposition of plants that are millions of years old. I am however very curious to find the true answer to exactly what the burning of these fossil fuels does to the environment and the plants that are currently inhabiting this planet.

I chose this video because it represents how difficult is for me to understand photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a complex reaction that involves water, carbon dioxide, glucose, and oxygen. The sun's rays cause tension on the surface of the plants leaves drawing water up the stem of the plant, while simultaneously stimulating the chloroplasts causing them to produce sugars to feed the plant. When the chemical equations involving the molecular structure of each element are placed in front of me, it confuses me and makes the process of learning photosynthesis as well as cellular respiration difficult for me.

The Sudanese savanna grasslands bordering the Saharan desert are a biome in danger of being swallowed up by the desert. This savanna is a biome known as a grassland. It is home to many plants and animals that graze on these plants. Over the past 100 years it has been documented that the Sahara has increased its size by 10%. This is a result of climate change and climate cycles driven by anomalies in the sea surface temperatures.

Despite the positive consequences of the Neolithic Revolution, it had plenty of negative consequences. Disease both small scale and epidemic scale, became more common as humans began to live within close proximity to each other for long periods of time. Combined with unhygienic living conditions, this was a breeding ground for new bacterium. Leprosy and cholera were among the most common and easily transmittable diseases that swept through early civilizations.

This is a John Deere combine harvester. The invention of the oil powered combine allowed the harvesting of crops to be much more efficient and time proficient. This allowed greater tracks of land to be used to grow crops and lead to a greater crop yield. This brought with it a more profitable agricultural industry that became an even larger asset to a nation's GDP.

Tobacco is used for the chemical properties of the nicotine it contains. It has taken the lives of countless users and non users throughout the world. In a negative way it is the most influential plant based chemical in the world.

As the population increases, we will require to grow and harvest more crops. But will this be sustainable? can the Earth support such a large continuous harvest?
