A report by the Sutton Trust found that high-achieving students from independent (private schools) were twice as likely to apply to either Oxford or Cambridge University than high-achieving students from state school. This shows evidence of social inequality because even though working class students may have the same predicted grades they are less likely to have the opportunity to attend prestigious universities which could impact on their future life chances in employment.

Marxists believe that media representations of the middle class create a type of ‘false class consciousness’ which working class people are deceived into believing that social inequality isn’t as middle class deserving their success rather then as a result of unequal life chances. Middle class people are seen in the media as educated, successful and able to cope with life’s problems, they are seen as society’s norm. Marxists argue that these characteristics serve to promote ruling class ideology.

They suggested that EastEnders was a good demonstration of continuity and change in media. Change being they are showing elements of realism and what working class people actually look like, however there is still continuity - for example, unemployment, drugs, alcoholism, divorce etc. This shows evidence of social inequality as this does not accurately reflect the working class in todays society.

Newman said that there are very few shows that convey realistic representations of the working class, and when they are portrayed it is often in an unflattering or pitying light. This shows evidence of social inequality because it represents working class people in a negative light which can be damaging to working class people.

Devereux states that working class people are put into two categories; positive and negative. Positive portrayals of 'deserving' poor that contrast with the negative portrayals of those on benefits. This shows evidence of social inequality as any working class individual on welfare benefits will be seen in an extremely negative light no matter the circumstances.

He stated that the use of the word “chav” has become a way of demonising working class people. He also coined the term “chavtainment” this refers to reality tv shows that are dedicated to showing bad portrayals of working class people. This shows evidence of social inequality as stereotypes like these can lead to working class people being treated according to how they are portrayed - going from being portrayed as “the salt of the earth” to “the scum of the earth”.

They investigated media-generated moral panics about alleged welfare abuse. During this study/investigation they found that welfare issues didn’t make the news , and found that welfare was only newsworthy if it was involved with other issues such as crime , sex or fraud. A key finding was that the poor were constructed in the media as either undeserving or deserving and they argued that the media demonises certain sections of the underclass which has contributed towards legitimatising welfare cutbacks by the state.

This means that media representations are intended to exploit a programmes content in order to shock the audience. Although Price found that these people were presented as nice and genuine people who are disenfranchised by an unfair society. Price says that the audience often empathise and the representation of the poor being horrible was often missed by viewers.

Nairn found that the attention that is given to the royal family create something like a soap opera for the public - linked with a sense of national identity and patriotism. For example, events such as weddings, funerals and birthdays will be seen as a national events. In addition, negative and controversial actions performed by a member of the family will quickly be replaced with positive portrayals. This shows social inequality as the royal family are supposed to be held in high regard however if the controversial things they have done were to be done by someone else, say an individual from the working class, the news would not be swept under the carpet.

According to Reiner, people with wealth are seen as successful and are admired for their achievements. People are then encouraged to identify with the culture of consumption and materialism associated with the wealthy. This shows evidence of social inequality as the lifestyle of the rich encourages people who can't afford it to excessively purchase.
