Title:
Euthanasia Clash For Mentally Ill in Belgium

Website:
https://www.usatoday.com/videos/news/world/2017/10/26/euthanasia-clash-mentally-ill-belgium/107018396/

Summary:
There are only two countries that allow assisted suicides for mentally ill patients, Belgium being one of them. Supporters in this country believe that psychiatric patients should have the same right to die as terminally ill patients suffering from physical diseases. In Belgium, euthanasia is legal under the terms of unbearable and untreatable suffering. Of the 2000 cases of assisted suicide each year, about 40 are from psychiatric patients. There is concern in the country that one of the psychiatric doctors is not exploring all options for treatment, and therefore is granting euthanasia too easily, and possibly unlawfully, under the terms set forth. Dr. Thienpont has ruled on up to 40% of the cases involving psychiatric patients in Belgium in the last 5 years, and some euthanasia doctors have stopped accepting patients from her, citing not all cases met legal requirements. This brings up huge ethical concerns about making sure laws and guidelines are set in place, and are being enforced. Euthanasia can not be used as a tool for someone to merely commit suicide, it must be reserved for the sick, and suffering. There must be evaluations, and checks and balances put into place. Strict laws must spell out the requirements. I believe we walk a fine line granting euthanasia for mentally ill patients. I firmly believe it should be reserved for the suffering of physical diseases, as mentally ill patients may not be able to make the conscious decision on their own. Guardians also may not always be trusted to make the decisions on their behalves.
