The forest represents freedom, passion, emotional escape, and a lawless place. Hester is cast out of the town and has to live on the outskirts next to the forest. She has committed adultery and this is part of her punishment. The forest is a place where there is freedom. When Hester was given the scarlet letter, she takes control of her sin and embroiders it. This shows her independence and control of sin. This independence sets her apart from the rest of the town. Since the forest represents freedom and lawlessness, Hester lives right next to it because she also experiences those things. The lawlessness of the forest accepts Hester.

"The stigma gone, Hester heaved a long deep sigh in which the burden of shame and anguish departed from her spirit. O exquisite relief! She had not known the weight, until she felt freedom" (Page.199)
- Hester takes off the letter for the first time since her punishment was lifted. She felt more free in the forest and felt relieved and separate from the judgement of the puritan society and towns people.

" Such was the sympathy of Nature- that wild, heathen Nature of the forest, never subjugated by human law, nor illumined by higher truth", (Pg.199)
-The forest is a place that does not depend on the law of the land. Characters such as Hester and Pearl, both feel a weight off their shoulders while they explore the sinful forest. They feel that they can do whatever and truly become themselves while in the forest away from the judgement of their puritan community and a higher power.

" Pearl resembled the brook, inasmuch as the current of her life gushed from a wellspring as mysterious, and had flowed through scenes shadowed as heavily with gloom. But, unlike the little stream, she danced and sparkled, and prattled airily along her course", (Pg. 183).
- There are many different parts of the forest, the stream is one that is uncontrollable. Pearl is that stream seen throughout the large and mysterious forest. Pearl is young, joyous, and energetic in similarity to the stream. She has life flowing from her throughout everything she does. And starts to fully sparkle when she enters this forest of freedom.

The forest compared to a Puritan community, is light and dark. The forest is full of darkness and represents the evil part of the Puritan community. This evil and dark aspect of the forest impacts the community and characters as a whole. The forest has an untamed and unknown aspect that installs fear throughout the characters. Because the forest is a place that not many know what lies beyond, they consider it to be a place of punishment. In result, Hester must live in the forest where she feels the humiliation and fear of the forest. But the forest, does the opposite. It brings Hester some relief from the religious pressures from the Puritan community. It also allows her to become herself and create her own decisions and morals. The forest is a place of lawlessness and freedom for those that enter.
