What is REDCODE RAW?

RED CODE RAW is the RED camera's file format (like their version of an MP4 or MOV). But RED CODE RAW has massive benefits over them. IT captures in RAW which allows for more information and more to play with when editing. REDCODE RAW also provides tunable file sizes for superior image quality and lower storage requirements than other codecs

Briefly describe the difference between LOG and RAW files

RAW and LOG are designed to produce very flat footage that gives you the best options when it comes to color grading. When light hits the sensor in your camera it records and then separates it into red, blue, and green wavelengths this is the RAW data. LOG however is a video format and does convert the RAW data into a format and bakes in the ISO, white balance and exposure. Shooting RAW has an advantage in the sense that it is raw, uncompressed data. Nothing has been baked in like white balance, exposure and ISO

RED Tools is a convenient, multipurpose tool designed for use by filmmakers and camera operators to outline best practices in camera set-up for a variety of shooting situations. Compatible with RED’s DSMC2 and DSMC camera systems, each tool is customisable based on RED camera and sensor type. Standard film formats are also included for comparison.

https://support.red.com/hc/en-us/articles/115013901108-RED-Tools-App

TOOLS INCLUDED:

1. CROP FACTOR - Preview how a given focal length will appear depending on resolution setting and sensor type. Illustration depicts viewable area relative to a traditional 35 mm stills photography sensor by default, but other reference sensors are selectable within the drop-down menu.

2. R3D RECORDING TIME - Evaluate the video data rate and available recording time based on your RED camera settings. This can help you understand media requirements and production costs in advance of a shoot.

3. FLICKER FREE VIDEO - Find a flicker-free shutter speed and frame rate combination when shooting under artificial lighting.

4. DEPTH OF FIELD - Understand how various camera settings influence depth of field.

5. PANNING SPEED - Estimate the panning speed where judder will likely become too pronounced. The goal is to provide a more accessible tool than the charts and tables commonly referenced in cinematography manuals. It uses the standard rule of thumb that camera panning should not cause objects to transit the entire horizontal extent of an image in any less than seven seconds.

6. EXPOSURE - Assist with exposure when one camera setting has to change. Example usage scenarios include when a higher frame rate needs to be used for slow motion, when the T-stop has to change for depth of field, or when the shutter angle has to change to minimise flickering in artificial light.

ALSO - Donna App https://profilmmakerapps.com/app/donna/
and RED CINE X
https://www.red.com/download/redcine-x-pro-mac

1. 'The New Pope' used multiple RED WEAPON cameras with 8K HELIUM S35 sensors. Luca Bigazzi found the ability to shoot with two exposures – one for shadows and one for highlights – vital for enhancing both the look of The New Pope and to speed shot turnaround. RED’s HDRx® solution, which records dual exposures within the same R3D file, can decrease the chance of having to shoot at another time of day, use extensive ND filters, or install additional lighting.

2. ‘The Suicide Squad’ was filmed entirely with IMAX®-certified RED cameras. Together, Gunn and Braham evolved a dynamic shooting style that they agree wasn’t possible before the creation of RED’s latest camera innovations.

3. 'Guardians Vol. 2', was the first feature film captured on the 8K RED DRAGON VV sensor inside the WEAPON camera.

4. 'Ammonite' used a MONSTRO 8K VV and a key element for the cinematographer Francis Lee was the ability to shoot long takes. In that regard, shooting long handheld shots made a big difference if the camera housing the large sensor was more compact than a bulkier 35mm camera.

5. DRAGON-X 6K S35 was used on ‘A Hidden Life’ which due to the high contrast environment, the “IPP2 workflow and colour pipeline were very helpful in retaining the maximum latitude while being able to specifically control and preview the different highlight roll-offs."

(a) HDRX - High Dynamic Range eXposure. Having a higher dynamic range improves exposure and post-production flexibility, expands the possibilities for dramatic and unevenly-lit scenes, and enhances image quality and detail. It works by recording two exposures within the interval that a standard motion camera would record only one. Current RED cameras capture over 13 stops of dynamic range in standard mode, which not only surpasses high-end DSLR cameras, but is also comparable to color film negatives.
(b) IPP2 - Image Processing Pipeline 2. IPP2 streamlines image processing from the raw sensor information to an SDR or an HDR finish. This gives you a better idea of what you are capturing while shooting.
