Fiona Apple is an American singer-songwriter who's music is raw, bantering and passionate in the way she uses alternative rock and electro-pop to communicate her musical messages of mental health, feeling like an outsider due to her fame, and feminism about combatting standards and stereotypes women are held to by society around us. Her musical technology varies, as her primary producer for all her previous albums, Jon Brion, (Zollo, 2020), used to record her piano and vocals first, and craft all other elements like guitar, drums and keyboard after. All of her morals present in her discography apply to most women who have experienced the things she sings about, and I am one of those women. The way she sings of disappointment and raw and combatting behaviour due to mistreatment, or alienation, empathises with me and makes me feel understood.

Mitski is a Japanese-American singer and songwriter who's music is very experimental and jarring. Her music fuses the fashions of the indie pop and folk rock genres and she has seven albums out to date. I love Mitski's invigorating and intriguing music style and such is produced using various musical equipment, such as piano, orchestral performances, Protools HD, and even an Elka Panther transistor organ for warbly and alternative sounds. (Biancardi, 2017) The social themes present in her music consist of ones about alienation, feeling like you do not belong, mental health, social prejudice and gender stereotypes on the basis of feminism. (Green, 2021) All of these social themes resonate with myself and I can find comfortability in the themes present as I also experience them - which is what music is about.

Ethel Cain is an American singer-songwriter, model and multidisciplinary artist who writes, sings and produces all her own music. Ethel Cain's music is hazy, ambient and mixes elements of ''gothy'' pop and doom metal. In her very early days, she used a version of Garageband (Daw, 2022) on her school laptop, and when she finally formed more musical connections, she collaborated with Matt Tomasi, a multi-instrumentalist on some of her later projects (Daw, 2022). Ethel Cain makes music about religious trauma and abuse, love and mental health. I am a fan of Ethel Cain's music because it's dreamy and beautiful to listen to and understand. Her messages about love, loss, and tragedy apply to all generations and is written so affluently so hence it so easy to be a fan of her.

One of Mitski's musical influences is Jeff Buckley. Although she grew up listening to Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, N'Sync, and Britney Spears, she stumbled upon a CD of Jeff Buckley, an American folk rock, alternative and blues singer, songwriter and musical artist when she was exploring her musical taste. (Talbot, 2019) Jeff's music helped Mitski to understand that music can be divergent from mainstream pop and that songwriting can be diverse. (Palmer, 2023) This influence can be heard in her musical discography as she has alternative, and blues like ballads.

M.I.A is another one of Mitski's musical influences. Mitski's discovery of musical creatives like M.I.A and Bjork proved to her that ''you can do what you want, it doesn't have to be this pop formula or have this voice or look a certain way''. M.I.A is is a British rapper and record producer and singer. She first discovered her when she was waiting for someone waiting outside a music store. When she went in, she saw M.I.A's first album and thought it looked cool. She didn't even listen to it before buying, and now she says she's her hero and that she saved her many times. ''She's a trailblazer, she does exactly what she pleases.'' (Snapes, 2016) She says her popularity is proof that there are people out there, like herself, who feel like they understand what exactly she is saying. Mitski stated she is one of her biggest inspirations, and that is evident in the way she acts in the public eye and her approach to her musical openess present in her music.

Mitski said she was mesmerised by her album ''Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana'' as it has ''so much detail and so many instruments'' (Palmer, 2023). It's Mitski's favourite album and she labels it as the album she wishes to make. The dedication to detail and attention to the production is something she admires, and that is evident in the creation of her own music - through the use of multiple instruments, experimental soundscapes and the cinematic-like production to her music. Mitski said Ringo Sheena's music was one of her main influences for her fifth studio album, ''Be the Cowboy'' - listed in a playlist she curated in honour of the songs that influenced her during that specific time. (Byrne, 2018)

Fiona said in an interview that she discovered her through her brother's girlfriend, Lisa, when she was eleven years old. Lisa played ''Babooshka'' for the first time to her and since that time she loved her. Apple says from then on she used to play and listen to most of her music, including the album ''The Kick Inside'' on the piano. The most memorable songs were ''Feel it'', ''Moving'' and ''Wuthering Heights'' (Rozovsky, 2020).
Fiona's music is very similar to Kate, and that is evident due to her raunchy, raw, deep music, melodies and songwriting. She also said she is one of her heroes of the music industry and she even referenced her in the 2020 album ''Fetch the Bolt Cutters''.

Aimee Man was one of Fiona's forerunners for her melodic and soft rock sound as her producer, Jon Brion, worked with Man on her first two albums, (1993’s Whatever and 1995’s I’m With Stupid) (Gonzalez, 2020). Due to their proximity, her influence in Jon Brion's career influenced him and his technique and anecdotal viewpoints for his music producing - all which would effect Fiona's production. Aimee Mann and Fiona are friends and Apple has even inspired her musical process - cutting headlines from newspapers and rearranging them to inspire lyrics, a trick she absorbed from Fiona that she talked about in an interview (Taylor, 2020). Aimee's discography consists of the new age and alternative rock genre and this is similar to Fiona's. Her musical individuality is one that is expressive, akin to the way Fiona's is and makes it easy to understand her close influence on Apple's music.

Tori Amos is an American singer, songwriter and pianist who creates music that fuses music of the folk and jazz genre together. Both Fiona and Tori were heavily criticised throughout their musical careers for making music about heavy topics, such as sexual assault, feminism and misogyny, and combatting typical stereotypes for female musical artists by being outspoken, jarring and unapologetic. Tori Amos was heavily slandered for her experimental sound, where Fiona, in later years was praised for her creativity. Apple said in an interview that the only thing both women have in common is their experience with sexual assault, and piano. ''She's the poster girl for rape'' Apple said, alluring to the meaning that she is an example of a woman who has suffered, and is not a victim, but a survivor, and can be a role model for younger women who have similar experiences.

Florence and The Machine is an English indie rock band that combines the sounds of neo-soul, folk and art pop. The lead singer of the band is Florence Welch, a British-American singer and songwriter, and she is the primary writer for the band. Ethel Cain, also known as Hayden Silas Anhedönia, grew up in a very religious household, living in Florida, and raised as Southern Baptist. When Ethel decided to study music and classical piano at age eight, amongst the christian music she already knew, she discovered Karen Miller and the Steve Miller band (Wally, 2022). Then, in teenagehood, discovered her musical icon, Florence and The Machine (D'souza, 2023).
In school, she dabbled with Garageband and found her love for music production, and later released some of her music on social media platforms and gained a small following. Both Florence and Ethel's music is dreamy, talks of death, guilt, love and sex and both have a whimsical musical sound. Florence and Ethel are now friends in the industry and have performed together and created Elvis cover and duet that they released in in 2022.

Kye Kye is an American indietronica band that formed in 2010 and features Estonian-born Yagolnikov siblings, Olga and Timothy. Their music is of electropop and the indietronica category and Ethel discovered them when she was in highschool. Her mother was very strict and only allowed christian music, or gregorian chant records, so when she could, she researched new age pop and the current mainstream music of the time. ''That was pretty much it until I hit – I think I was about 12 or 13, I saw a Kidz Bop commercial, and they were playing ‘Hot N’ Cold’ by Katy Perry and the melody was so infectious. It was like the first pop song I’d ever heard in my life, and I was like, “What is this?” And so I went to my grandma’s computer and I looked it up, and I just went down this rabbit hole of pop music that my mother was like, “This is evil, you cannot listen to this,” but I would sneak listen to it on my own at my Mimi’s house. '' When Ethel got more into social media in high school, she found Florence and The Machine, and more indie based artists. She listened to ''a lot of dreamy-pop'' and finally found a band called Kye Kye. Cain bought the record of the band, called 'Fantasise' and she now says it just stuck with her. ''I have to make an album like this someday'', and that influence is very obvious in her discography today. (Pappis, 2021)

Lana Del Rey, also known as Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, is an American singer and songwriter with music mixing the genres of pop, indie and psychedelic rock. Ethel Cain was introduced to Lana, among other popular indie artists at the time, from friend she made all over the world on social media. ''But as I got more into social media in high school, they started introducing me to like, Florence, who became my biggest musical inspiration of all time. They introduced me to Lana and Marina and the Diamonds and HAIM and Imogen Heap, all these more indie pop artists. And then from there I was able to dive in even further and started discovering more underground artists, and then it just kind of exploded from there. '' Making friends worldwide opened up Cain's world, and made her realise her sheltered, religious life could be different. ''I think I signed up for Twitter the summer before my freshman year. And that’s when I started finding friends and I was like, “Oh my god, there’s other people in the world that exist.” (Pappis, 2020) Both Lana's and Ethel's music is very dreamy, volatile, and often full of ballads about love and death, so her influence from a transitional period of Ethel's life is very evident in her discography.
