Stage 2 - Intra-psychic phase
 one person thin about what they are dissatisfied with in the relationship. The person considers the cost and rewards of ending the relationship. Thinks about alternative partners. - this experiment is the counter example  to the hypothesis of the theory 
- despite the empirical support from the theory the study is criticised for failing to take into account the consideration of emotions 
- however this study helped in explaining what causes infidelity amongst marriages 
- this study is biased because of possible lack of cross cultural validity- behavior is more likely to be individualistic than cultural collectivist 
- not replicable because it is difficult to quantify costs and rewards in order to test the theory carefully
