I have seen students use their schema in class during reading on many occasions. One example would be when a student was reading a book about a football player, and he used his knowledge of playing football to connect with the character in the story. I believe that, in younger grades, a student should be reading something they have prior knowledge of because they are reading to strengthen their reading skill and not so much comprehension. As students progress throughout their education, I believe they should be introduced to unknown topics through literature.

I believe that schema heavily affects comprehension because if a student has prior knowledge of a topic, they are more likely to better comprehend it when reading about it. The more that our schema changes is based on what we experience. This means that the more experience a student has, the stronger their schema. Comprehension is only strengthened by the progression of schema.

Then I would use those surveys to create lessons that each child would be able to connect to based on their own schema. As a student makes connections, I will point-out the act of accessing their background knowledge/schema and encourage them to continue making connections.

It makes the reading relatable for the students. I think about the younger grades reading about pets, they love to make connections to their own pets. I think it is important for students to make these connections because it means that they are thinking and relating to their reading.

An older student who travels, spends a lot of time in different cultures, and is constantly learning new things will have a broader schema than a younger student who only knows their family and culture. The more experiences and memories the broader our schema will be.

The book was about a young girl who felt insecure about her natural hair. As we read the book, I asked my student if she knew what it meant to be insecure. She responded by telling me that she had also felt insecure about her natural hair and understood exactly how the character felt. I think it is beneficial for students to have background and interest in a topic but I also think they should be exposed to new topics and ideas.

My students will choose books based on the content they are learning/have learned (espeically in upper grades). I have seen them read and make connections during their independent reading time and when being assessed. I think that it is beneficial for students to read books on topics that they have background knowledge of, because it may help aid in the building of their comprehension. All though, I don't think that this is more beneficial. While helpful, students should be able to get engaged in information in text that it new as well!

In my placement, I have seen several students use their schema while reading and in other subject areas as well. Often times if a student has schema with a book, they are reading they will be more engaged with it. I believe this is one reason it is more beneficial for students to read books over topics they already have background knowledge of. The more the student knows about the topic the easier it is to read, understand, and retain the information.

I believe that schema and reading comprehension has a direct effect on one another. When a student lacks schema over a topic, they do not have enough information over it to understand it fully. This lack of background knowledge can negatively affect a student's reading comprehension. I think as our schema grows and changes our background knowledge changes and grows as well.

I feel like when a student uses their schema it allows them to think deeper in to the reading as they have had information stored already with them. That is really what teaching is also, when a teacher shows the student a new piece of information and what to do, it most of the time always comes with a model to show them so they best understand what is expected in their turn. Yes, I believe the modeled example made it easier for the students to do themselves.

He was a lower reader, so he usually did better on reading when the book was about something he was familiar with (usually science). Reading with him was always interesting, because, he would be reading aloud, struggling to sound out words, then finally finish the sentence, then pop his head up and exclaim some science fact related to what he had read. It really got him motivated to keep reading to find out more about his favorite topics. I think the best way that I can help students build prior knowledge is through connect new knowledge to their past experiences and past learning. Learning is always developing and growing. Even thinking to DOK, the pyramid of knowledge builds as the student progresses. An example I gave this week to build on prior knowledge to what is being taught was connecting chemical changes to what students have probably already experienced such as baking a cake or gasoline running in a car. Then, these prior knowledge examples get connected to new learning of why they are chemical changes. They end up learning the attributes of a chemical change through the examples.

I think what we learned about thinking strategies last week can be applied here. For example, we can use a K-W-L chart, and I think I wonder I know graphic organizer. With the KWL chart, you can assess prior knowledge by having students write down what they already know (their schema), what they want to know, and what they learned after. With the I think, I wonder, I know, the process is similar. Students can demonstrate prior knowledge and then add what they learned. These are just a few ways you can assess prior knowledge and get students thinking about their schema.

While I do believe it is beneficial for students to read books on topics they have background knowledge on, I also believe it is important to read books with new information. Students who are struggling with reading/reading comprehension should be using books/topics they are familiar with so they can learn to make connections. Students who are solid readers and can comprehend should extend their knowledge base and be exposed to new ideas. Exposure to new ideas advances student knowledge base.

When a teacher demonstrates how to do something or gives an example, students are able to see an action or process in reality. When students can see this and think back to the demonstration/example, they can think of or imagine how to do something on their own in a similar way. Students do by seeing in my opinion. Young children are like sponges in the way that they absorb what they see.

I love the idea of a schema map. This is an activity where students write what they already know about a topic on a sticky note and place it on the wall/board under schema. This exposes students to the word schema in addition to its meaning. Students then learn/read about the topic and write on another sticky note what they have learned that is new knowledge. To finish, students go back and write any misconceptions they had in relation to their schema statement. The schema statement from the beginning of the activity was to get students thinking about what they might already know. Looking back at any misconceptions allows students to fix their previous thoughts and replace them with correct facts. This activity gets students thinking about knowledge they already have, building new knowledge on the same idea, and correcting any incorrect knowledge they might have. This is also an interactive activity which allows students to be engaged in their own learning.

I do believe that it is really important for students to read books on topics that they have some background knowledge of. This allows them to pull from personal experiences and understand the content on a deeper level. I have had the opportunity to see students in placement use their schema to make connections to what they have read. I have found that when they are able to use their schema, they understand the content so much more than when they do not have any background knowledge on the topic.

Schema can have a positive affect on memory. It is beneficial for kids to learn about new things while also applying that new information to things they already know. There is typically a set way that things are done, for example, a story about a kid being bullied. The kid will likely experience events leading up to the most significant event in the middle of the story, and then the story will climb back down and lead to a positive ending. Understanding this common story format can help students make connections and comprehend new ones.

When students don't have a strong background knowledge of a subject it can be really hard for them to understand what is being taught. this can be said in any subject that the student is taught. so, if a class is reading a book on ww2 but that have no schema, they would lack understanding of what is happening and this is where the teacher needs to establish schema for the students. -alyssa sparks

when helping students build their prior knowledge, i would want to have a class discussion on what they believe a certain topic is and then talk to them about what it really is. I would want to give verbal examples and visuals to go along with it so students understand what it is we are learning about. - alyssa sparks
