Plants play different roles in the environment around us. One example is that they provide animals a habitat to live in, as pictured below. Plants are also a source of food for many animals. Not only that but plants produce oxygen for us to breathe, and create soil! Plants can also be used to preserve soil and prevent erosion. It is my understanding that certain plants are used for products we purchase and use daily, like clothing, medicine, and fuel.

I chose this video because I find the process of photosynthesis to be rather confusing and complicated. Once I could get past the hosts energetic personality I was able to get a better understanding of the different steps: Light dependent reactions and light independent reactions. The humor in this video made it easier to make real life connections to a biology concept.

The website I did research on covers most of the land plants native to the state of Georgia. It is categorized by bryophytes, lycophytes, ferns, and seed plants. The website also goes in depth about the history, identification, life cycle, and gardening care for each of these plants. One interesting fact I found on this website (see pg 8) is that there are annual minimum temperature zones in Georgia which affects the growth of native plants.

The tundra is in major danger of ecological change because of one key issue: global warming. Temperatures are steadily increasing melting snow cover and causing the water level to rise. This retreat of sea ice will enhance the productivity of tundra vegetation, resulting in more plant biomass and possibility of tundra fires. If all of the wasn't enough, climate change will completely put the ecosystem out of whack.

Source: https://www.britannica.com/science/tundra/Effects-of-human-activities-and-climate-change

Crop rotation is one of the advancements that catapulted the third agricultural revolution. The concept is simple yet effective- moving your crops over a period of time. Doing this, manages soil fertility, controls pests, and reduces soil-bourne diseases.

Paclitaxel, or taxol is a derivative of a plant called Pacific yew Taxus brevifolia. I find this to be one of the most influential drugs in the world because it is used in the treatment of cancer (chemotherapy.) An estimated 1.7 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year (https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/understanding/statistics) and many of those will have to go through chemotherapy- so this plant derived chemical will have an impact on thousands of lives.

If just one of our agricultural, economic, social, or political practices go unchecked, our entire system will be lopsided. There reason we have these systems in place is similar to why we have checks and balances in the government- so not one department rises above another. Over time the world has figured what practices work best to create a natural system: production, consumption, and waste for sustainability.
