"Lots of boys and girls watched while I cried and ate my sandwich, the bread already greasy and the rice cold" (Cisneros , 45)

She can't feel comfortable at her own school with other boys and girls her own age around her. She is growing up in a very care-free innocent stage in her life but fails to feel the way she should. This is relative to compare to my lifestyle growing up . I felt confident growing up because of where I came from, I lived a happy life in a safe neighborhood. My parents were able to have easy access to the simple things - like lunch meat in my sandwiches. Small things such as this truly had an impact on how Esperanza felt through her childhood and created obstacles for herself. However, she eventually gets through these obstacles and becomes strong and independent as a woman.

Life at home for Esperanza

Esperanza is so affected by her social and racial class treatment, that it begins to affect her lifestyle at home. She doesn't feel she is portrayed the way she should be as a young girl. "If I ate at school there would be less dishes to wash. You would see me less and less and like me better ... you would appreciate me" (Cisneros, 44). Esperanza feels as if she is not appreciated whether it be at home or at school. This comes from how she is represented at school based on her socioeconomic status as well as racial status. She is not accepted therefore her confidence is deteriorated in several aspects.

Esperanza wishes to stay at school to eat her lunch rather than be forced to eat it at home. This simple request cannot be accepted by her mother. "Oh no she says pointing to the butter knife, as if I'm starting trouble, no sir" (Cisneros, 43). This demonstrates how the stress of raising a child in the poor neighborhood they are living in impacts the parenting style of Esperanza's mother. In turn, Esperanza cannot live her life at school as happily as she should be able to. However, her mother does give in. Sister Superior gives her a hard time due to where Esperanza's social class stems from.

Sandra Cisneros invites readers to grasp an understanding of what it is like to grow up as a Mexican-American. Growing up differently from most serves as a challenge for those individuals, especially when social class is tied in as well. She provides great insight on the experiences and challenges main character, Esperanza continues to face.

The incident of Martine's rape creates a poor representation of herself in her head. Due to the way women are portrayed in Haiti, Martine always believed the rape incident was her own fault. She was never given the support she needed after something as traumatizing as this. She is so affected that she resorts to killing herself after not being given the support from it. Martine's death helps Sophie realize what is best for her in the future years to come. She realizes she needs to be a strong empowered woman, everything her mother wanted her to be.

Significance of Martine's Testing

"I hate my body. I am ashamed to show it to anybody, including my husband. Sometimes I feel like I should be off somewhere by myself" (Danticat, 122). Martine believes that a woman should stay pure due to the expectations of women in Haiti. Her strong opinion on this results in her testing Sophie for her purity. In the end, it causes Sophie to feel ashamed to have what God has given her. She is afraid to open up to Joseph (her husband) because she feels she is doing something wrong. These feelings stem from her mothers treatment while she was growing up.

Martine and Atie: Strict Upbringing for Sophie

The way women are portrayed and treated in Haiti is of very little value. Especially compared to what we are use to in first world countries, like America. This results in Sophie needing to be extremely cautious with what she does around them and not being able to freely express herself. It holds her back from who she truly is. When she is brought to America she comes to realize everything she was missing when she lived in Haiti. Her mother still knows nothing more and has to create continue to create a strict upbringing for Sophie. Sophie resorts to sneaking around her mother in order to get what she wants accomplished. This creates a hole in their relationship that impacts them throughout the entire story leading up to Martine's death.

She demonstrates how gender roles are very prominent in today's world especially within different cultures. In this case, she touches upon the Latinx culture.
