Erin Gruwell (the teacher) has one of the most challenging times ahead when she is confronted with a very diverse group of school kids. Her teaching philosophy is clear from the start which is she is not a person who gives up on her student and always goes the extra mile for them. She shows compassion, trustworthiness, honesty, and respect to each of her students. She truly challenges their behaviour, beliefs and ability to be better. Throughout the movie, it's not easy but she never gives up on them but rather pushes them to excel. This shows a teacher that really puts thought into her work and also giving her best at all times.

The teacher mainly focuses on reading, writing and speaking. She does different activities with her students where she challenges them to write about their own lives and the things they go through on a daily basis. She lets them speak in front of each other telling their own personal stories. This also opens a door for students to learn about different cultures and beliefs and learners get to learn from each other. She lets them work in the classroom and do group work, this teaches the student they can exchange ideas and support each other. The above mentioned things all connect with cooperative learning as well as problem based learning.

Mr Keating (the teacher) is anything but an ordinary teacher who only comes to work to do the job and calls it a day or only does it because he gets paid. Rather he challenges the boys to "seize the day" and make the most out of every opportunity life throws at them. He challenges the school beliefs and system, he tells his learners to do more than what is expected from them. He believes that his learners should view the world from a different perspective and freely think about everything. He emphasises that learning is beyond what the textbook says.

Mr Keating has a very unorthodox teaching approach and method. He rather expresses to his learners that they should jump off of their desks, quote poetry while they play soccer and even go of into the woods to read poetry. Their are many approaches and theories but this teachers chooses to not follow any of it. This shows his learners that one should follow your own path and thoughts and not be influenced by what the traditional school system wants you to do or be.

Relevance in South Africa

I believe that every method has its own time and place and seeing that there are so many one can pick and choose which to use. In a South African context I would say that Dead Poets Society is the least relevant to the context as our schools are overcrowded, limited resources and a massive gap between rural government schools and private schools. Freedom Writers on the other hand is the more relevant movie, teachers can easily adopt a few of the methods and strategies used by the teacher and incorporate it in their everyday classes. Learners and teachers will be able to easily connect with each other and help each other learn more.
