Orwell in the story depicts and warns about Oceania filled with telescreens and cameras everywhere to make sure the citizens don't do anything that would go against the government.
This meme presents a picture from Pinterest of everyday technologies that has eyes on a civilian. They all say "You Can Trust Government" This picture is telling us that the government has eyes on all civilians at all time.
This relates to Orwell because today government has eyes on everyone through phones and modern televisions. Recently the NSA has been accused of invading privacy of the Americans by obtaining information without telling. This is a minor problem because civilians' privacy can be invaded eternally as well as the start of a dictatorial governing. However the extent of this problem is limited because surveillance is somewhat needed.

Fake News

Orwell in the story warns how the government of Oceania brainwashed the citizens into thinking the country is doing well when it really was not.
Today we see fake news everywhere and people tend to believe it. With few clicks a person can be informed about a country in a totally biased or untrue stories.
This article by Bruce Riedel explains how our current POTUS claimed to have made a $110 million arms deal with Saudi Arabia. However the news was later found to be fake where the kingdom had not signed any contracts nor agreed to Trump. It has later been concluded that Arabia might have an interest later on but no agreements have been settled. This relates to Orwell's story because the government of Oceania told fake news to their civilians about their state of war claiming that everything was going well when in reality the country was suffering. Today we see fake news everywhere which affects many people into thinking the wrong way about the country.

Orwell in the story tells of Oceania constantly being in war with the world around them. A quote from the book tells how the government announced yet another victory from the war."Attention! Your attention, please! A newsflash has this moment arrived from the Malabar front. Our forces in South India have won a glorious victory. I am authorized to say that the action we are now reporting may well bring the war within measurable distance of its end. Here is the newsflash –"Bad news coming, thought Winston. And sure enough, following on a gory description of the annihilation of a Eurasian army, with stupendous figures of killed and prisoners." Winston already knew what the government was going to say even before it was proclaimed. This tells us that Oceania has been at war for a long time with other superpowers.
Today we see this happening in countries in the Middle East and Asia. The US is currently fighting ISIS and on top of that tensions are rising between superpowers and countries that have possession of nukes such as Russia and North Korea.
This relates to Orwell because both ours and his world were at constant war. From the Revolutionary war, Civil War, WW1, WW2, and the Cold War, America seems to always be in a war with itself or others. This presents a serious problem because war comes with great costs of lives and money. Elevated war today can result to the loss of many lives, and possibly the end of the world. This video by USA Today shows footage of the American army launching a cruise missile to Syria.

Leader Wor

Orwell in the story depicted the idea of leader worship in Oceania. Most civilians seemed to follow and listen to whatever the ruler said without any special reasons, except the fact that he was president.
Today we see this in our world, specifically North Korea, located on the Korean Peninsula underneath China and Russia. North Korean had been under the influence of communism and dictatorship after WW2. When a North Korean defect, Jeon Geum-Ju, was interviewed by the Washington Post, she described her past life under the rule of Jim Jong IL.
Starting from a young age, she was required to sing a song, about the president. The song described Kim Jong Il as a hard worker, a worker who tried so hard that he slept in his car and only ate rice balls. She was also taught to throw a ball at a dummy that had white pale skin and long nose which appeared to represent the Americans. The ball represented a grenade. Everything that the president said was right.
This relates to Orwells idea of leader worship because today in our world some countries practice brainwashing so that one follows the leader no matter what action is taken.
This son is North Korea's national anthem which generally talks about the nations heading into victory in war. It also talks about its national pride over and over. This is a form of brainwashing because anthems are created bring unity in a country. This song tricks civilians into thinking North Korea is the all mighy country in the world.

Orwell in the story tells us how the government in Oceania simply erased anyone who opposed the government. For example, the Thought Police was created by the government to erase anyone who even thought something against the law.
Today in our world we see this in the US where the CIA tortures detainees overboard. According to RT America the CIA practiced several torture methods such as rectal feeding, waterboarding, freezing death, continuous standing and much more. However the more important part is that some of the detainees were only suspected criminals and had no evidence to back the torture. The CIA still carried out their plans to torture the detainees which most of the time led to death. This relates to Orwell because he warned readers about the coming of a totalitarian government and erasure without trial. This political cartoon shows the government trying to torture a detainee but to no prevail.
