His beliefs and faith are questioned as he fights for survival: “I was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific, hanging on to an oar, an adult tiger in front of me, sharks beneath me, a storm raging about me”(Martel 87). Despite the overwhelming odds against him, Pi remains determined to survive, hanging on to the oar and facing the challenges before him with courage and bravery (participle). The reader see's Pi's mindset change; he struggles to keep himself thinking positively (two related sentences on either side). Through Pi's vivid language and powerful imagery, the reader is able to connect deeply with Pi's experience and gain a greater appreciation for the power of storytelling to convey the complexities of the human condition.
