Once the Sumerian priests realized writing was something much needed, scribes were made. A scribe is a trained cuneiform writer that keeps records in ancient time. As a scribe, it doesn't matter if you get into some trouble as long as you are good at writing. Scribes also wrote the fist mathematics books.

Priests to Kings

Priests once were depended on by the Sumerians to tell them what the gods wanted. Only the priests could communicate with the gods so these people were very important. Without priests, the Sumerians wouldn't know how the weather, and how to impress them. Priests ran the temples of their gods, but once kings came into the picture, priests got most of their jobs taken away from them. New canals roads, and temples were made. Kings then took over the city-states and then expanded them and changed the way they were ruled. Even though the kings basically changed the priests, they still pleased them. They did this because the kings needed their support to stay in power.
