NURS: 210: Leahi Hospital
Long-term Care
Clinical Hours: 90

During this rotation, I learned to apply the knowledge and skills taught in our Fundamental course while caring for patients in a long-term care facility. I performed physical assessments, attained vital signs, administered medications, assisted with ADLs, provided G-tube feedings, performed wound care and dressing changes.

NURS: 220: Kuakini Hospital
Medical Surgical
Clinical Hours: 108

During this rotation, we built upon the skills learned from our previous semester and honed our clinical decision making skills. Skills performed included: IVPB medication administration, subcutaneous injections, glucose monitoring, converting IV to saline lock, and discontinuing IVs. In addition, we improved on our therapeutic communication and critical thinking by developing detailed care plans for each patient.

NURS: 320: Kapiolani Medical Center
Family Birthing Center/ Mother Baby Care Unit
Clinical Hours: 144

During the maternity-newborn rotation, I observed in the Family Birthing Center, the role of a RN during the ante and intra- partum period. I learned of fetal heart-rate monitoring and the interventions to remediate abnormal fetal heart rates. I witnessed the role of the OR nurse, surgical technologist, Anesthesiologist, OB doctor, and the primary nurse during a cesarean section and epidural insertion. I was also present during a vaginal delivery, and witnessed the interactions between the primary nurse and the residents. On the Mother Baby Unit, I assisted in caring for both mother and baby. The skills I performed included physical assessment of a newborn and postpartum woman, newborn cord and circumcision care, post-operative monitoring, and provided patient education.

NURS: 360 Castle Medical Center
Psychiatric Mental Health
Clinical Hours: 64 Hours

During this clinical rotation, I had to opportunity to work with a number of client with mental illnesses. We focused on developing our therapeutic communication skills and various mental assessments. I was able to co-facilitate group activities which focused on psychosocial and psychoeducational topics.

NURS: 360 Straub Hospital
Medical Surgical
Clinical Hours: 112 Hours

During this clinical rotation, our clinical instructor focused on preparing us for the real life expectations as a nurse. We began our clinical caring for one to two patients and eventually worked our way up to four to five patients. We honed our critical thinking, time management, communication, and priority setting skills. I had the opportunity to perform numerous nursing skills, such as medication administration (oral, intramuscular, IV, subcutaneous, and topical), wound dressing changes, tracheotomy care, IV start/discontinuing, and documentation. I was also involved with new admissions, transfers, and discharges. This clinical rotation has given me an understanding on what it takes to be a successful nurse.

Nursing is a truly unique profession. As Myrtle Aydelotte describes, "Nursing encompasses an art, a humanistic orientation, a feeling for the value of the individual, and an intuitive sense of ethics, and of the appropriateness of action taken." The essence of nursing lies in our ability to empathize, lead, and care for those in a holistic evidence base approach. As healthcare is continuously evolving, we as nurses must continue to adapt and seek ways to create efficient ways to improve patient outcomes.
