Pupusas and Potatoes: Self as part of Family/Community

Catalina is my abuelas (grandmas) name. In Latin tradition a baby is given their fathers and mothers last names. Bu comes from my father side in Honduras, Central America. Morrisroe comes from my mother's side she is mostly German and Irish and is from Idaho. My middle name is Marie, which in fact is shared with my mothers two sisters and several cousins. I don't feel connected to many objects that I have earned personally but I do feel attached to small gifts I have received from my parents and grandparents. My favorite traditions are any events that brings my family together.

A value my family holds strongly is to value education and language. My family still practice the Spanish language at home and it is the primary communication for my father's family. I has made such an impact on my immediate family my mothers side of the family has learned some of the language to be able to communicate with them as well. The meaningful community events my family and I participate in are events that give back to those in the community who need help. We volunteer our time cooking dinners, donating food, and passing out food at the local food bank. As a Latina with light skin I do not face the discrimination that my father and his family do, but I recognized that my voice can be heard as an ally to those who are silenced and provide support in finding resources for families. I have the privilege to here in the United States with many opportunities unlike some of my family members in Honduras. I am an ally in that I can interpret and translate for families in need. I understand the bias in the community against people of color and fight for justice in the face of racism and discrimination.

"Fair doesn't mean giving every child the same thing, it means giving every child what they need"- Rick Lavoie

To understand a student is to provide the correct and efficient tools and strategies to guide them in their education. This includes the students background, culture, home life, language, and personality. Disciplinary literacy must be fluid enough to transform into any means to support a student. It should rise up to meet that student just as it did the student before them.
