Google also allows you to translate the sites back and forth between languages so you, the teacher, can evaluate the usefulness of the site even if you do not speak the other language.

These sites are helpful for a variety of purposes. The ESL games site and Maggie's Leaning Adventure site can be used to help beginning English speakers learn basic vocabulary and grammar concepts. BrainPop, Maggie's Learning Adventure, and 2Lingual Google Search can be used to make grade-level content accessible to students in their own language (mostly for Spanish Speakers, but Google search works for any major language). WordGen is better for bridging the academic language gap through repetition using activities, videos, stories, and cognates to teach concepts through using multiple approaches to a theme.

It is imperative to keep up with the latest theory and practices in education. Technology makes doing this so much simpler in the past. However, I think there is also a danger in that some teachers (myself) are hoarders -- it used to be that I would gather up all the discarded materials my colleagues didn't want. Now I find, with the collection of resources and ideas so easily at my fingertips, it is easy to get lost in an information glut and not put a few things in to practice well. Selective research into best practices is helpful.

There are so many available tools on the internet to help students access content and give students ways to display learning. Technology gives a visual element to learning and has functions to help students think critically about what they read and write. There are endless varieties of sites that have applications in the classroom. Technology is one way to move the learning from being teacher-centered to being student-centered. It allows students to be creative. When I use GoogleSlides and GoogleDocs in my classroom, it is pin-drop silent unless students need to ask a classmate for tech help -- they are that into the technology piece. However, collaboration and oral communication are, of course, also crucial components to developing language. As technology use becomes widespread students must still be given many opportunities to collaborate and communicate. Technology certainly can be a vehicle to foster all of the four C's - it just has to be used judiciously.

Technology presentation platforms and game creation gives students a chance to show what they've learned and share it with others. Having students work with the content to determine what is critical requires analysis and synthesizing learning. This takes the assessment deeper than students merely responding to show knowledge or comprehension, and requires them to apply what they have learned.

Sites that review and describe other education sites and technology are useful. Sites used to supplement content information are also helpful. Whether the content is delivered through articles or videos it needs to be carefully evaluated for the how well the content supports ELLs language development and what types of scaffold and supports are needed for all students to access the content provided.

Philosophy of Integrating Technology with Emergent Bilinguals

The SAMR Model is a lens through which to evaluate the use of technology in the classroom. Many substitutions of tasks can be shifted to technology. What really needs to be evaluated is the rigor and quality of the task itself. If the task is to read a passage and answer questions, the task is at a very low level on the DOK wheel or on Bloom's pyramid. Whether done paper/pencil or on a computer, the task is still shallow. Many of these activities now are augmented by programs that provide more individualization, adaptive features, and immediate feedback that helps to target student learning according to individual needs, but the tasks are still not building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. That doesn't mean there is no place for tasks like this. All students need to build up a knowledge base to delve deeply into various tasks; it is important, however, that these tasks have a purpose. Writing an essay is a higher level task. Again, technology can substitute for paper and pencil, and it can enhance the task through spell check and editing and collaborative features. The real test of whether technology is being used well is if it is being used to engage students at higher depths of knowledge, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating what is learned, and using what is learned to create and communicate with others. As technology use increases, one major area for educators to keep in the center of their focus is language learning. This was not on the TPCK wheel, except at the point where pedagogical decisions examine both content and language skills needed to perform a task. As technology individualizes education to some extent, teachers must be even more aware and committed to ensuring that ELLs have the skills to meet the language demands of the task. In addition, the tasks must scaffold language development and help students grow and develop both greater content knowledge and language proficiency as a result.
