In the novel, Life as we Knew it, Miranda and her family get scared to go outside after the moon gets hit by a meteor and is not in orbit anymore. This is because there was a huge event where everybody went outside. Everyone was talking about how the moon was going to get hit by a meteor and no one really thought it was going to be a huge deal. In the text it says, "The electricity still was not on, and with the lightning not striking so close or so frequently, things were actually darker in the classroom. The sky was still gray and I think we all felt like the storm could come back at any moment..." (Pfeffer 31). This evidence proves that because of the meteor, there is very bad storms and it could be dangerous to go outside. People are staying in their homes. They know that it is not safe outside and are scared to go out there. This shows Miranda and her family are nervous of the outside world.

-Charlotte O'Dwyer

A back story of a war, revolution, uprising, spike in overpopulation, natural disaster or some other climatic event which resulted in dramatic changes to society

In life as we knew it, they have faced dramatic changes. In the book, they look forward to seeing this asteroid hit the moon. Indeed they do but, afterward a big part of the moon breaks off, and suddenly everyone is going crazy. Fighting over supplies, getting everything they can, and saving up in case they go into survival mode. "'Get your own!' she yelled right back at him. 'This is war, man'"(Pfeffer 37). Sweet little Mrs. Nesbitt said that. When a man tried to take the last cart, Miranda kicked him in the back and Mrs. Nesbitt pulled away. They used to be much less crazy but, the big disaster that went on with the moon has changed the way they act. The moon has broken and everyone is going nuts which is an aspect of the dystopian genre.

-🙂 Violet Scelfo 🙂

In the novel, life As We Knew It, the author potrays the president as being a little bit of a liar on the news. The novel has several parts where the president will come on the news and say everything is alright but it´s not and everyone knows it because a meteor literally hit the moon and its causing tsunamis and weird weather. The United States has suffered its worst tragedy. But we are a great people and will place our faith in God and extend a helping hand to all who need us (Pfeffer 25) Even though states are getting destroyed the president isnt making a big deal out of it and people need to know that it not ok and they need to take action imeadiately. The people of Mirandas societys are very worried and dont know what to do. Sinc ethe presendint isnt giving people a lot of information they are not gonna be prepeared for what happens. the presindent seems to kind of be unbothered.

The setting in, Life as We Knew It, is apocalyptic. The moon has been split into pieces and the whole world was informed to stay inside and get all of the food and supplies they will need. They think that the world might be coming to an end. In the text it states, "That were going to die?... I asked... Like were going to starve to death or something? ... I do not think mom is worried we are going to starve to death... " "Mom is eating less already. She doesn't have break feast and she only eats if I make her... Matt said" (Pfeffer 64). This shows that their family and everyone around them is worried they will run out of food, won't be able to survive, or sooner then later the moon will come crashing down and the world will end. Miranda's mom is worried about not being able to feed her family, that she is not feeding herself enough. Everyone's electricity is going on and off by the minute. Who knows what will happen if they stop getting signal forever? This proves that the world might be coming to an end, and people are starting to get very worried. -Charlotte O'Dwyer

In the novel, Life as We Knew It, the author potrays the setting as being apocolyptic. the reason for this is because a meteor hit the moon and there are insane tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and all sorts of things happening. this is causing everyone to panic and steal stuff, and go crazy. She says its better if people dont know what we have stored away, like someone is trying to break into our kitchen and steal our cans of soup (Pfeffer 52). Mirandas mom is worried that peopel will break into their house because they have so much food and people are desperate and will do anything they could do get something. the people of Mirandas society are going insane because the world seems as if its ending.

In life as we knew it, the setting is apocalyptic. The electricity is on and off, the moon is moving closer every second, and barely any of the teachers are in the school. "But I can't help thinking that I'm not strong. Would I give up food for Jonny if it comes to that? Is that what Megan did at lunch on Friday? Will things ever be normal again?"(Pfeffer 65). The terrifying world they are living in is changing their mindsets. People suddenly are scared that things aren't ever going to get better. One rumor going around is that they'll all be dead by Christmas. This is an aspect of an apocalyptic setting.

For example, in the text it says " get the biggest bags that will fit there" ( Pfeffer 33). This shows that they had one chance to get everything they need before the store closes because of the terrible weather. A custom that this story has is that They are aloud to have divorced parents. "Lisa is pregnant. Dad called around 11 o clock to let us know..." (Pfeffer 1). This text evidence shows that Lisa is the stepmom. Miranda's dad and mom got divorced.

To start off, a rule is that they could only buy $100 worth of food and supplies at a time because everyone needs things. also, some customs are that Divorce is accepted, kids go to school, and and they have normal homes. Although a lot of stores are closed at the moment, mostly everything else is potrayed as a normal world. "Miranda, you're going to canned vegetables and fruits"(Pfeffer 33). This shows that the characters can still have normal conversations in a store while chaos is happening around them.

In the novel, life as we knew it, the rules and customs aren't so different from our society. The rules and customs are pretty similar to ours but theirs are more important because it is kind of the end of the world. "One bag per household ... Make any trouble and no bag" (Pfeffer 98). ''Do you understand me? I can't let you risk getting pregnant'' (Pfeffer 102). The first one would be rules because the state troopers don't want anybody taking more than one bag. The second one would be customs because her mom would be angry if she did get pregnant. This is an aspect of rules and customs.

In the novel, Life as We Knew It, the moon got closer to earth. A meteor hit it which caused it to come closer to earth. Everyone has been around the feeling that the world might be coming to an end. To create a mood in this book the author uses a tense feeling about the moon and if the world is coming to end. For example, in the text it says, "There's no way of knowing the number of deaths.... The communication satellites are down, telephone lines are down" (Pfeffer 24). This text evidence shows an example of how there is no way to know what is really happening. Electricity is going on and off. The main characters are doubting that the moon will go back to it's normal orbit. Not even the news men or any news channels know what is really going to happen and if the world is going to end. This proves that the author creates a tense and stressful mood for the story because of how high the chances seem to be about the world coming to an end.

In the dystopian novel, life as we knew it, the atmosphere describes a place where natural disasters could just happen. None have yet to happen to our protagonist but, this story is very unpredictable. " I asked Mom if things were better than they have been. Had all the bad stuff, the floods and the earthquakes and the volcanoes, stopped? She said no, that once the moon's gravitational pull had changed, things could never go back to where they'd been" (Pfeffer 159). The Mom in this story assumes the world is not going to go back to normal ever again.

The world the protaginist lives in is somewhat normal but with a huge crisis happening which makes it seem like a disaster. To set up this mood, the author uses tense scenes to give it a sense of stress. "...some guy tried to steal the cart from Mrs. Nesbitt"(Pfeffer 36). People are stressing out and going crazy to the point where they aree trying to steal a cart from an old woman. The change in society is causing people to only think of themselves and be selfish because they want to survive.

Everyone is panicking about what is going to happen with everyone in their society. In the text it says "But now the moon was tilted and wrong and a three-quarter moon and it got larger, way larger, large like a moon rising on the horizon, only it wasn't rising. It was smack in the middle of the sky, way too big" (Pfeffer 19). The moon was tilted the wrong way and way closer to everyone on earth. Everyone started screaming in panic and immediately went to check the news. They are nervous this might be a huge danger to their society. Will the world end? Everyone is asking but no one is answering. The panic in Miranda especially is deeper then everyone else. She has a feeling that they will not have enough food and will maybe starve to death. The worry is building up more and more.

Since everyone is freaking out about supplies, food, and water, people started to stock up on things and frantically pile food into there carts at stores to the point where there was nothing left."...people were screaming and crying and fighting. I plowed through people and raced to the canned vegatables"(Pfeffer 35). This shows that Miranda is by herself fighting all these people just to get some food. Thsi supports my claim because she has to go up against everyone.

In life as we knew it, everyone/society thinks that Miranda is so lucky. What they mean is that her and her family haven't had any close deaths, they have a nice wood stove and a good supply of food. "But then I remembered that the last time Peter came over her said that people were setting fires in their houses to keep warm and then the houses caught fire...We should be careful with fire" (Pfeffer 177). This text evidence shows that lots of houses caught fire yet theirs didn't. This shows how lucky Miranda and her family really are vs. Society.

In the novel, Life as We Knew It, a symbol that the author uses is Millers pond. The protaganist, Miranda, has been going there for swimming and its the only thing that keeps her going."Swimming, I said. At Millers Pond. Which I intended to keep doing all summer long...,"(Pfeffer 84). Since everything else in the world is going wrong, Miranda counts on the pond because it gives her a sense of hope. She also just enjoys going there in general because she has a passion for swimming.

In life as we knew it, a key symbol is the moon. Ever since the asteroid hit the moon, everyone has been going insane assuming that they will all be dead by Christmas. "At that second, I think we all realized that it was Our Moon and if it was attacked, then we were attacked" (Pfeffer 19). That was the second that the moon got hit and everyone knew that nothing would ever be the same. The author brings in the moon to add a dystopian aspect to it.

In the novel, Life As We Knew It, a symbol that the author uses is the moon. It it like a cycle that keeps on getting spoken about and stressed about. "It was still our moon and it was still just a big dead rock in the sky, but it wasn't benign anymore" (Pfeffer 19). This is describing how the moon was and how terrifying it was. It explained how different the moon was from after the meteor hit. Before the meteor hit the earth was tilted the right way and was not so close to earth. The author uses the moon as a symbol to help understand how it feels and how different it is from our moon today.
