"I really don't see anything romantic in proposing. It is very romantic to be in love. But there is nothing romantic about a definite proposal. Why, one may be accepted. One usually is, I believe. Then the experiment is all over. The very essence of romance is uncertainty. If ever I get married, I'll certainly try to forget the fact.

Jack/Earnest is speaking to Algernon about his love for Gwendolen, Algernon proceeds to explain how proposing takes away the romance from being in love. Algernon states that if he ever were to get married, he would try to forget the fact that he was. Jack doesn't disagree, and the conversation continues. The quotation reveals Jacks love for Gwendolen, but mostly Algernons feelings toward proposals and marriage. Algernon believes romantic love is better then marriage because there is not anything romantic about being in love.

Earnest(Jack) has just brought up casually how himself and Gwendolen must get married at once, Gwendolen loves him so much she wants to hear the exact words come out of his mouth. Despite not even knowing the full depth of each others lives, Gwendolen agrees to such without hesitation. Gwendolen is very optimistic about love and is now truly infatuated with Earnest himself and being married to him.

Ernest, we may never be married. "From the expression on mamma’s face I fear we never shall. Few parents nowadays pay any regard to what their children say to them. The old-fashioned respect for the young is fast dying out. Whatever influence I ever had over mamma, I lost at the age of three. But although she may prevent us from becoming man and wife, and I may marry some one else, and marry often, nothing that she can possibly do can alter my eternal devotion to you."

Gwendolen's mother has just found out about Earnest proposing, to see if he is suitable for her daughter she sits him in a room and questions him. Earnest was doing pretty good up until she asked about his family and where he came from, having no acceptable answer because he was found in a hand back at a train station, he told her the truth. Quite taken back by this news Lady Bracknell rips her notes up and leaves the room. In the presented quote Gwendolen is telling Earnest now they must never get married. However even though they shall never be married, her love for him won't go away. Gwendolen's love for Earnest go's beyond just the title of marriage and will stay with her throughout all her other marriages.

Algernon, who hasn't found anyone to love yet, see's marriage as a business deal more then for pleasure.

"On the 14th of February last. Worn out by your entire ignorance of my existence, I determined to end the matter one way or the other, and after a long struggle with myself I accepted you under this dear old tree here. The next day I bought this little ring in your name, and this is the little bangle with the true lover’s knot I promised you always to wear."

Cecily has this on going fantasy of a knight in shinning armor riding in on a horse and saving her. When she heard her uncle Jack had a brother by the name of Earnest, she let her imagination run so wild she fully convinced herself he had proposed to her and they were to be married. She wrote letters to herself from him, she bought a ring in his name and presented it to herself. She even broke of their "engagement" just to forgive him and get re engaged before the end of the week. Cecily created this whole character and fell in love with him with out actually ever meeting him or knowing what he looked like.

"Never speak disrespectfully of Society, Algernon. Only people who can’t get into it do that. [To Cecily.] Dear child, of course you know that Algernon has nothing but his debts to depend upon. But I do not approve of mercenary marriages. When I married Lord Bracknell I had no fortune of any kind. But I never dreamed for a moment of allowing that to stand in my way. Well, I suppose I must give my consent."
