         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think Freire's perspective that education was oppressive really made me consider the set up of dialogue in the class. "Teacher talk"&nbsp; in comparison to student voice can be heavily weighted to the teacher. This doesn't allow the students to voice their opinion and creates an environment where the students are just taking in information. Without thinking critically, this can be a dangerous position for individuals to be in. You can see where information being presented - whether it is the ideologies of the teacher or society - can perpetuate oppressive systems and ways of thinking. It minimizes the students ability to think critically about what information is being given to them. To move away from this, I think create an open dialogue and, as Freire mentions, a space where the teacher and students are learning together.&nbsp;- Rebecca</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>traditional forms of education; a prime example bring the banking model, is oppressive--in fact this very form of education mirrors the structure of an oppressive society. The banking method, as Freire explains, declares the teacher as the ultimate power, who is always correct and all-knowing, which creates a hierarchical effect that puts the teacher on the pedestal and the students as simply the recipients of information. The banking form of education privileges the mechanical, the dichotomous as well; students are not active parts within society, but just mindless objects that are meant to absorb information that has been deemed correct and appropriate by the authoritative figures. I think, in order to create an environment that privileges humanity and liberation, educators must understand the community they are teaching. It is up to us to forge a connection, to understand the intersectional identities of our students, to make sure we are teaching content that makes our students critically think, makes them question, connect and find value and meaning.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Kenya, there is a National Exam system that requires all students to write the same assessment. You are told what careers are the best (doctor, engineer, pilot etc...). This is oppressive - students become objects.&nbsp;<br><br>A lot of conversation has taken place around creating a more dialogic pedagogy, but not a lot has happened to change the minds and approaches of the educators.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>More Humanization in Education</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Yes, traditional forms of education are oppressive. In an anti-oppressive classroom, ideally, “everyone teaches and everyone learns”.&nbsp;</strong></div><div><br></div><div>The traditional form of education is a very top-down approach - the teacher is seen as the expert, and the students are expected to have the “right answer”.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Free-form thinking is not valued. Teachers talk TO students, and students are expected to accept and will lose ability for critical thinking. Lacks consideration about reality that students live.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Educators should open dialogue with students about realities into the real-world ie: Anti-Black racism. Also - moving away from the banking method.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Also important is how students and teachers arrange their bodies in a classroom setting - the teacher doesn’t always need to be standing at the front of the classroom - important to think about new classroom arrangements - circles, etc.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Liberation within Oppression</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Dialectic and student-centered learning is definitely set out as a goal for teachers, but very little transformative work is done. At least in my experience, we are taught those liberatory goals, but the model used to teach them is the banking model! Teachers who question or resist or express doubt are not invited to explore their reservations, and therefore we never see a model of how we're actually supposed to create that community in our classrooms. As a result, we don't always know how to model it for our students. I have certainly been frustrated by the lack of depth that students bring to the table at the beginning of the process, but I have to remember that they've been trained to mistrust their own knowledge.<br>Thanks, folks! --Catherine</div>]]></description>
