The Odyssey: The End of the Quest by Eric Gershman

Joseph Campbell states in his Hero with a Thousand Faces that, “The heroic man or woman, having done that which seemed impossible, has returned with a level of integration. To accomplish this task we must have all the best attributes of both genders, be aligned with the forces of nature, and have the best of allies. At the end there is a big celebration. The sense of fulfillment is extraordinary at that point. Such people have amazing energy. The force is truly with them.” How much of this has been realized after the “Slaughter in the Halls”? Has Odysseus (and/or Telemachus) fully reached his maturation as a heroic figure in terms of the ideas proposed by Campbell? Would you agree that the “force” is truly with Odysseus? Explain with direct references from the text combined with your own commentary. One extended paragraph minimum. You can either respond on your own and/or comment on someone's post with a rejoinder comment. Be sure to self-edit your writing before you post. It is worth (10) points toward your final test, so make it worthwhile.

Now back home about to leave again Odysseus has been reunited with his wife and now adult son. After 20 whole years and then some Odysseus, Telemachus and Penelope are together at last. Odysseus must now tell his family he is leaving once more to bury an ore where they know nothing of the sea as an offering to the god Poseidon. As it stands I believe Odysseus is now at the peak of his heroic journey. He has gone and conquered Troy as he dreamed and made it back to family. Now after this next journey he's about to go on, I think he is finished with his adventures and just wants to live a nice peaceful life with his family. As stated in the prophecy by Theseus Odysseus will live a long life and die of old age. Telemachus however is just beginning. He fought alongside his father in a fight to regain his palace he is just starting his journey, But I fully agree with the fact that Odysseus has reach the full extent of a hero he can be. Like I said he reached and conquered Troy his riches and joined his family after 20 years of nonstop battle within himself, the forces of the outside world, and even hell itself. So yes you can say Odysseus is now one with the force and his son, Telemachus, is just starting to tap into his hidden strength.

Throughout the book, Joseph Campbell's theory of the hero's journey is shown. Although in book 22 Odysseus has not reached the end of his journey. Odysseus has not reached the end because he still has to fulfill his offering to Poseidon and carried an ore to where the people do not know of the ocean and bury it there. Tiresias tells him to do this in book eleven and says “You must carry your well-planned oar until you come to a race of people who know nothing of the sea...then plant your bladed, balanced oar in the earth…”(11.253.139-147). Until Odysseus does this he can not settle down with his family and relax. I do think the “force” is with Odysseus because he is home at last and he has only one more task. Also Athena has helped him and gave him the encouragement by saying “Where’s it gone, Odysseus- your power, your fighting heart? The great soldier who fought for famous white armed Helen, battling Trojans nine long years- nonstop, no mercy, you seized the broad streets of Troy with your fine strategic stroke”(22.446.237-441).Odysseus lost his “force” or need to fight and Athena is giving it back. Although Odysseus is home, his journey is not complete.

In the Odyssey, I would agree that the “force” is truly with Odysseus. To accomplish Odysseus tasks he was aligned with the forces of nature and had many allies on his journey. Many people, gods and goddesses helped Odysseus throughout this journey. One goddess that was in favor of Odysseus and helped him through everything was Athena. Athena helped Odysseus kill off all of the suitors in book 22, Slaughter in the Halls. At the end of book 22 Odysseus had done what had seemed impossible, he had made it back home to Ithaca and slaughtered all the suitors. Odysseus knew that he had done the impossible, “ They came crowding out of their quarters, torch in hand, flung their arms around Odysseus, hugged him, home at last, and kissed his head and shoulders, seized his hands, and he, overcome by a lovely longing, broke down and wept… deep in his heart he knew them one and all.”(22.454.525-520) This quote shows how at the end of his journey there is a big celebration, and that the sense of fulfillment is extraordinary. In the end Odysseus is more matured as a hero because he respected all the ones he had killed, “ No cries of triumph noe. It’s unholy to glory over the bodies of the dead. These men the doom of the gods has bought low, and indecent acts.” (22.452.438-440) Back in the beginning of the story after Odysseus had defeated the Cyclops and escaped safely, he went back just to taunt the Cyclops. He has matured and his son has too. They respect the gods even till the end, even at the end of his long journey, he stayed humble. In the end Odysseus had fully reached his maturation as a heroic figure, he is wiser than before his journey.

Much of the force has been realized in Book 22, The Slaughter in the Halls. Throughout the whole Odyssey, Athena, the goddess, has been helping out Odysseus through his journey. In The Slaughter in the Halls, Odysseus had the most help from Telemachus. Telemachus left the door open to the storeroom with all the weapons in it and Melanthius got into it. Odysseus didn’t get mad at Telemachus he just told him to hang Melanthius alive from the rafters. Odysseus had matured the most throughout the book. Telemachus also matured by living and doing everything mostly without his father. Although Odysseus made it back to Ithaca twenty years later, his journey is still not over. Tiresias told him "You need to carry your well planned ore until you come to a race of people who know nothing of the sea....then plant your bladed, balanced oar in the earth...(11.253.139-147) When he got back to Ithaca, he couldn't just sit and relax with his family. He needed to leave right away.

In the epic poem, The Odyssey written by Homer, it relates back to the idea of Joseph Campbell with Hero of a Thousand Faces. In book 22, Slaughter in the Halls, Odysseus and Telemachus shows the relationship with the idea Joseph Campbell proposed. Odysseus journeyed for 10 years to find his way back home, which sounds impossible to some, yet he still defeated all his enemies and made it back with some help. Odysseus and his men fought men and monsters and still they manage to find a way out alive. On the other hand, Telemachus, without knowing his father and no helper except Athena, has manage to keep his father’s kingdom intact and maintain the suitors to a certain level. It shows how they both, complete something impossible or extraordinary so that they can re find the home that they both once lost. Telemachus shows bravery and becomes more mature throughout the years because of Athena or maybe because he has realized that he is the only man in the house and he needs to step up. While, Odysseus gains knowledge and wealth throughout all his journeys making him into the man he is when he has returned to Ithaca. The force is truly with Odysseus and even Telemachus. Odysseus has Zeus, “The Father of Men and God,” making him the strongest God and Odysseus also has Athena, who is the daughter of Zeus, who gives Odysseus and Telemachus inspiration and help. For example, in Book 22, Athena inspires Odysseus and his men to fight for what they want (home) and to not give up easily. Also, there were the Phaeacians that brought Odysseus back home and been a great host to him. After getting back home to Ithaca and killing all the suitors and maids that betrayed him, Odysseus says to Eurycleia, “Bring sulfur, nurse, to scour all this pollution-bring me fire too, so I can fumigate the house”(22.454.509-512). It shows how Odysseus has reclaim his kingdom after doing the “impossible" and joining his family again with a huge celebration.

Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus, was faced with many difficult tasks and decisions. The statement “The heroic man or woman, having done that which seemed impossible, has returned with a level of integration. To accomplish this task we must have all the best attributes of both genders, be aligned with the forces of nature, and have the best of allies. At the end there is a big celebration. The sense of fulfillment is extraordinary at that point. Such people have amazing energy. The force is truly with them.” by Joseph Campbell applies to Odysseus for a variety of reasons. Odysseus fully reached his maturation In book 22, “Slaughter in the Hall”. By this point in time Odysseus has overcome most of his tasks and quests that he has had to do. Some of those tasks being, escaping and killing Polyphemus, finding Tiresias, escaping Charybdis and the sirens, staying with Circe and Calypso, and many others. In Joseph Campbell's quote it says that the hero must get aligned with other forces which Odysseus most definitely did. He allied with Athena, Circe, Tiresias, Calypso, swineherd, cowherd, and many others. The quote also states that at the end of the quest the hero must have a celebration and achieve a sense of fulfillment which Odysseus had after he came back to Ithaca, killed all the suitors, and reunited with his father, wife, and son. Unlike Odysseus, his son, Telemachus, did not fully reach maturation and become one with the force. Although Telemachus did help his father kill the suitors and travel around the world looking for Odysseus he still did not truly complete the full hero's Journey. Telemachus is still a young man at the end of the story and has much of his life that he has yet to live. In his future years is where Telemachus would start his journey if he were to have one. In the Odyssey Telemachus was only adhering to Odysseus and helping with his journey, not starting his own. All in all at the end of the book Odysseus definitely reached maturation and became one with the force while Telemachus had yet to start his own journey to achieving maturation.

Throughout the story of the Odyssey, The two main characters, Odysseus and Telemachus, both seemed to have earned their keep and have matured from their previous state as a hero to some extent. One of them stood out and that would be Telemachus. Not only did he run the country at a very young age but he also had to make due without his Father’s wisdom to guide him. So he left on diplomatic envoys in search of any information on his father's location or even if he is still breathing. This marks Telemachus’ call to adventure (but he isn’t really adventuring). With Athena’s help (Mentorship) and inspiration, She lead him around to find a way to keep Telemachus safe as she watched Odyssey voyage home. I believe that the “force” is with Odysseus in the form of the gods(mostly Athena). After the Slaughter in the Halls, we see Telemachus as thrilled to see his father in fighting form and more than happy to join him in battle But Odysseus looks to have Matured as a hero far more brutal then Telemachus.

A lot was realized in the book “Slaughter in the Hall.” For one, Odysseus realized how much power he actually has compared to the suitors.’” With that he trained a stabbing arrow on Antinous…”’(22:439:8-20) This was before all of the suitors panicked and threatened him out of scarce. Making him feel even more powerful, because they do not know who he is yet. ‘“ You dogs! You never imagined I’d return from Troy--...”’(22:440:37-42) this shows him revealing his identity to the suitors to make him sound great and fearless by what he just did. Odysseus has show what he can do to them and himself, therefore he has matured. Yet, Telemachus, was the one who actually matured more. This is because his story is more of a “coming of age” story. In the beginning of The Odyssey he was still 18. As the chapters go on he became more of a fighter.”Amphinomus rushed the king in all his glory, charging him face-to-face, a slashing sword drawn--..”(22:442:94-112) Telemachus is making decisions like Odysseus by killing Amphinomus. Showing that he is in fact heroic. I do agree that the “force” is truly with Odysseus. I think this because his whole objective was to return home and he did that. Although, he did have help along the way with Athena to keep him on his track. Athena was disappointed in Odysseus because he lost his so called “fighting heart” ‘“Where’s it gone, Odysseus-- your power, your fighting heart?”’(22:446:236-246). So Odysseus and Telemachus have matured both.

The Odyssey is the story about how the protagonist Odysseus, needs to get home to his family and kingdom. The hero goes through many hardships along the way home like Helios and Polyphemus, but through it all he manages to get home. Once he arrives home he is welcomed by suitors in his home trying to steal his wife! So Odysseus teams up with his son and their trusty Swine and Cowherd to kill the suitors. After that Odysseus is reunited with his family and kingdom and can finally have peace at last. Odysseus goes on this long, hard, journey and comes home to kill 22 suitors for his kingdom. This shows how much Odysseus will do for his kingdom and family because he comes back and does the impossible by killing all the suitors. Also how much Odysseus went through to get back to his family shows that Odysseus will do anything for his loved one and this journey has helped him realize how much they need each other. Throughout the story many people died along the way home, but Odysseus didn’t because he had the “force”. By the “force” I mean that he had Gods and Goddesses watching over him the whole time. He had to be brave and crafty and he had to hoodwink many people just so that he could get home to his kingdom. Without the goddess Athena watching over Odysseus, he would have died a long time ago. This whole journey home has matured Odysseus and has made him view his life very differently than before and his love for his family forever.

In the story The Odyssey, Odysseus has to go through a gruesome journey to get back to his home country, Ithaca. Odysseus had a 10 year journey home with many challenges in front of him. I believe that Odysseus did not have “the force” with him. The gods all hated him and did whatever they could to keep him away from his home country. Aeolus wouldn't give Odysseus and his men good wind to sail, Poseidon would keep the water flowing different directions so he couldn't get home and Zeus the Father of all the gods would throw lighting bolts at Odysseus and his men whenever he could. “It's a crime to host a man or speed him on his way when the blessed deathless gods despise him so. Crawling back like this--it proves the immortals hate you!” (10.232-233.79-83) This quote shows that the immortals despise Odysseus and will do whatever to keep him away from his home country. Odysseus’s journey should have only took 2 weeks to get home, but it took 10 years. That is why I don't believe Odysseus had “the force” with him.

The Odyssey: The End of the Quest- Iman KeeneIn the novel the Odyssey, Odysseus journey ends when he finally gets back home and kills all the suitors. However he still has more to come. He was told by Tiresias to “go forth once more, you must… carry your well-planned oar until you come to a race of people who know nothing of the sea ,whose food is never seasoned with salt, strangers all to ships with their crimson pows and long slim oars, wings that make ships fly...when another traveler falls in with you and calls that weight across your shoulder a fan to winnow grain. Then plant your bladed, balanced oar in the earth and sacrifice fine beast to the lord god of the sea. Poseidon- ram , a bull and a ramping wild boar- then journey home and render noble offerings up to the deathless gods who rule the vaulting skies to all the gods I order. In this quote he is telling him to travel somewhere far away and bury an oar as a sacrifice to the god Poseidon. Still after that he has his journey back home again. On the other hand, I do believe that the force is with him. He reclaimed his palace, reunited with his son and wife but still hasn't reached his maturation. To conclude, no Odyssey has not fulfilled his journey in life.

The Odyssey: The end of the quest - Luke McWilliamsOdysseus finally made it back to Ithaca. It took him ten years and those ten years were full of many perils and hardship. Even when Odysseus was on his difficult and perilous journey, there were many suitors trying to win his wife. This problem was solved when Odysseus made it to his halls. There he slaughtered each of the suitors. After he was finished killing the suitors, he forced the nurses to clean up the bodies and scrub the floors. “Start clearing away the bodies. Make the women pitch in too. Chairs and tables- scrub them down with sponges, rinse them clean. And once you’ve put the entire house in order, march the women out of the great hall- between the roundhouse and the courtyard’s strong stockade- and hack them with your swords, slash out their lives- blot out their minds the joys of love they relished under the suitors’ bodies, rutting on the sly.” (22, 463, 452) Odysseus still had a taste for killing even after he slaughtered the suitors. It would not do much to kill the women. Odysseus practically had to kill the suitors, but he did not have to kill the women. Blood lust consumed him, which is not surprising. Blood lust can not only consume fictional characters, but also real people, serial killers, soldiers, and others. In my opinion, I do not think Odysseus has reached his full level of maturation. The typical hero does only what he or she has to do. Odysseus did what he had to, but he also did things that he did not have to do at all. Joseph Campbell said that by the end of a story the force is truly with a hero. I do not think that the force is truly with Odysseus.

I believe that some of the Gods are actually on Odysseus’s side in book 22. A Goddess that is on Odysseus’s side is Athena. Without Athena Odysseus may not have won the battle in The Slaughter in the Hall. She inspires Odysseus telling him that he could kill all the suitors by reminding him that he wiped out a whole civilization before he got here and that he shouldn’t let a few men stop him. What Athena said in Book 22 is, “Where’s it gone, Odysseus-- your power, your fighting heart? The great soldier who fought for famous white-armed Helen, battling Trojans nine long years-- nonstop, no mercy, mowing their armies down in grueling battle-- you who seized the broad streets of Troy with your fine strategic stroke!”(22.446.236-241) This explains how Athena helps Odysseus get through his Odyssey and how some of the Gods are on his side.

Throughout The Odyssey, Joseph Campbell's theory of the hero's journey is shown. At the end of book 22, Odysseus has reached the end of his journey even though Odysseus still has some things to do since he is home now. He needs to make his offering to Poseidon and carry an oar in the middle of nowhere. Tiresias gives him multiple instructions in book eleven but this quote shows the exact instructions Odysseus needs to and says “You must carry your well-planned oar until you come to a race of people who know nothing of the sea...then plant your bladed, balanced oar in the earth…”(11.253.139-147). Until Odysseus has completed the ritual he cannot relax or do anything he wants to do. This ritual is of paramount importance. You can tell that force is with Odysseus because he could have been killed at any time. While was fighting a suitor, another one could have caught him off guard and killed him and he is home at last and he has only one more task. Also Athena has helps him when he has lost his will to fight. She encourages him to fight by saying when he lost his will to fight. “Where’s it gone, Odysseus- your power, your fighting heart? The great soldier who fought for famous white armed Helen, battling Trojans nine long years- nonstop, no mercy, you seized the broad streets of Troy with your fine strategic stroke” (22.446.237-441). Since Odysseus is home and has done everything the gods asked him to, they are finally on his side.

In the end of “Slaughter in the Halls” I think that Odysseus and Telemachus have fully reached a heroic level. When the end of book 22 comes Odysseus has already been through many tough challenges which he has dealt with for ten years. He has already been at war for ten years as well. Joseph Campbell states “The heroic man or woman, having done that which seemed impossible, has returned with a level of integration. To accomplish this task we must have all the best attributes of both genders, be aligned with the forces of nature, and have the best of allies. At the end there is a big celebration. The sense of fulfillment is extraordinary at that point. Such people have amazing energy. The force is truly with them.” This quote is saying to be a hero the person must have overcome impossible tasks, have great allies, celebrate his victory, and still have integration. Odysseus fits all of these, first he has overcome many impossible tasks such as escaping the Sirens, Charybdis, and Scylla. He also has Athena as an ally who is very powerful and saves him many times. He also returned home not completely mentally broken down and still had some of his integrity left. And lastly the celebration can be seen has him getting revenge on all the suitors and maids. I also think the force is with Odysseus. A good quote that shows this is “Concentrating their shots, all six hurled as one but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark.” (22.447.268-269) This quote shows that Athena who is a god is on Odysseus side, and she can be seen as a “force”. Also Odysseus wouldn’t have made it home if it weren’t for the help of Aeolus the god of winds, and Zeus the god of thunder and king of all gods. To conclude all the gods that helped Odysseus are the ‘’Force” that helps him get home alive.

All throughout the Odyssey Odysseus faced many hardships and conflicts. While Odysseus was on his journey he had to go through some gruesome and risky tasks to make it back to Ithaca. I believe that the "force" was not with Odysseus throughout his 10 year journey because the most of the gods hated him. I also believe that the force was not with Odysseus because even though he finally returns home his journey which should have taken months took 10 whole years, and all throughout his journey he had some major set backs which took him way off course. I also believe that the force was not with Odysseus because all of his men died in horrible ways and Odysseus was the only one left in the end.

The Odyssey is a story about Odysseus (main character) who has to get back home otherwise known as Troy and on his venture to get back home to Troy he deals with many things to get back home like Polyphemus Poseidon's son who is a cyclops and Scylla the beast with six heads. All of Odysseus's shipmates die just to get back home. When Odysseus gets back to Troy he is encountered with an obstacle. Suitors who want to take his wife. When Odysseus is in his home he is disguised as a beggar so nobody will recognize him. When Odysseus draws his bow and kills Antonius the rest of the suitors get mad at Odysseus(22.8-31.439-440). Odysseus than replies and says why would you come in my house and try to steal my wife and all that and then he kills them all with the help of Telemachus and his two swineherd. After he kills the suitors he is finally reunited with his family. The whole book is saying how much Odysseus has grown through a 10 year journey. The whole journey shows that Odysseus does have the “force” by the force I mean the gods have helped him especially Athena. I definitely feel like this the end of Odysseus’s journey and he will have a peaceful death like Teiresias said and won't go on anymore ventures.

After book 22 of The Odyssey; “Slaughter in the Halls” it has become apparent that both Odysseus and Telemachus have reached a level of maturation. It has also become apparent that Odysseus and his family are on good terms with the forces of nature; the god’s. Athena, goddess of wisdom and war fought alongside Odysseus and Telemachus during the Slaughter in the Halls as an ally. Athena used her force to help Odysseus get his palace back. After the suitors annexed weapons from the storage room they began shooting arrows at them and when Odysseus notices this Athena performs a remarkable act that Odysseus tells about through saying, “At his command, concentrating their shots, all six hurled as one but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark--”(22.447.267-269). This relates to Joseph Campbell's ideas that say a hero should “be aligned with the forces of nature, and have the best of allies.” Odysseus has the best allies because his allies are god’s- which goes along with the hero being aligned with the forces of nature. After the slaughtering of the suitors was complete Odysseus light the great hall on fire to “scour all this pollution” (22.454.509) and “fumigate the house” (22.454.510). Odysseus was overcome with joy at the end of the chapter because he had finally gotten home, and won it back.

A lot of Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces is realized after “Slaughter in the Halls”. Odysseus and Telemachus have been through so much on their separate journeys and have done everything to reclaim their land. To have accomplished this, Odysseus needed the help of his family and the goddess Athena. Both genders have played a big role in the adventure, Penelope with her unrelenting loyalty to Odysseus, Athena with her powerful and wise ways, Telemachus with his seeking of knowledge, and Odysseus with his persistence to get home to his loved ones. They had such determination to get what was rightfully theirs. I believe that Odysseus, even as an experienced war hero and king, still has some knowledge to seek out. Odysseus has endured much suffering and came out a better man. Telemachus has definitely prospered throughout his quest to find his father. He has matured to a level in knowledge collecting and seeing how kingdoms are ruled. Both have become more knowledgeable and both can still learn more. I do agree that the “force” is with Odysseus because he not only got help from others, but some gods, mainly Athena, have helped him along his way. They are his force and he has become more powerfully minded because of this. Odysseus didn’t need Athena’s full but only her inspiring words of reassurance: “...she lashed out at Odysseus now with blazing accusations: ‘Where’s it gone, Odysseus--your power, your fighting heart? The great soldier who fought for famous white-armed Helen, battling Trojan nine long years--nonstop, no mercy, mowing their armies down in grueling battle--you who seized the broad streets of Troy with your fine strategic stroke!...’ … Rousing words--but she gave no all-out turning of the tide, not yet, she kept on testing Odysseus and his gallant son, putting their force and fighting heart to proof.”(22:446:235-249). Odysseus and Telemachus, plus Eumaeus and Philoetius, all fought harder and stronger. They all came out victorious and agreed there was enough slaughter. The Odyssey is a wonderful example of Hero with a Thousand Faces.

Throughout the story almost everyone in the story has matured. Over the twenty years that Odysseus has been gone fighting in the war and trying to get back home, he has learned a lot. When he gets back home to Ithaca he saw all of the suitors that were trying to take his kingdom and his wife away from him. So he get’s back together with Telemachus, Cowherd, and Swineherd to fight and kill of the suitors. Just when you would think that Odysseus has made it home, and he can be with his family again, he has one more journey to go on. In book eleven, he was told by Tiresias, the blind seer of Thebes, “go forth once more, you must… carry your well-planned oar until you come to a race of people who know nothing of the sea ,whose food is never seasoned with salt, strangers all to ships with their crimson pows and long slim oars, wings that make ships fly...when another traveler falls in with you and calls that weight across your shoulder a fan to winnow grain(11.253.138-146). This shows that just how much he will do for his family and his kingdom. Joseph Campbell said that “the force” with with Odysseus throughout the way back to Ithaca and I agree. Many of Odysseus companions and shipmates died and he still made it back. I think that the force was Athena. She helped him throughout the whole journey.

After reading “Slaughter in the Halls” I have come to the conclusion Odysseus has not reached full maturation as a character. In the chapter Odysseus becomes filled with rage because he finds out how the suitors have been trying to take his wife while he was gone. I believe that if the “force” was really with Odysseus he would have not gone on a killing rampage. Odysseus did not come back and make peace all he did was kill. An example of Odysseus’s ruthlessness form the text is, “Odysseus scanned his house to see if any man still skulked alive, still hoped to avoid black death. But he found them one and all in blood and dust”(22.451.406-408). I believe that this quote shows that Odysseus has not returned with a level of integration. Odysseus was not aligned with the forces of nature, and he had little allies. He did not come home happily to greet his people. He came home and slaughtered every suitor without giving them a chance to explain themselves. If Odysseus was fully matured as a hero he would have been thinking instead of just killing. Also if the force was with him he would have thought about his actions before he did them.

Odysseus went through quite a lot of hardships in his 10 years trying to get back to Ithaca with his wife and son Penelope and Telemachus. After “Slaughter in the halls,” a lot from Joseph Campbell’s “Hero with a Thousand Faces,” is realized. His journey ends when he finally arrives in Ithaca and kills all of the suitors. When he is finished killing the suitors, he asks the nurse in his palace to, “ Bring sulfur, nurse, to scour all this pollution-- bring me fire too, so I can fumigate the house,” (22.454.509-510). This may seem that Odysseus has finished his quest or journey and is starting fresh and new at his palace but that is not the case. When Odysseus went down to the House of Death and visited Tiresias, blind seer of Thebes, he said, “But once you have killed those suitors in your halls-- by stealth or in open fight with slashing bronze-- go forth once more, you must… carry your well-planed oar until you come to a race of people who know nothing of the sea, whose food is never seasoned with salt , strangers all to ships with their crimson prows...When another traveler falls in with you and calls that weight across your shoulder a fan to winnow grain, then plant your bladed, balanced oar in the earth and sacrifice fine beasts to the lord of the sea, Poseidon,” (11.253.136-150). This means that Odysseus’s journey is not over and he still has more hardships to come. I do believe that the force is with Odysseus because he reunited with his wife, Penelope and his son, Telemachus with the help of others, especially Athena. Odysseus has reached his maturation because on the way home he has learned lessons about how fame isn’t more important than being home with his family.

Odysseus was seen as the perfect heroic figure because of how much he gained throughout his journey and hardships. He conquered the impossible. Sure he is home but he has to make it up to the gods and people he has made angry. He hasn't yet ended his now 20 year old journey but he shortly gets to reunite with wife and son who is an adult now. He just killed all of the suitors in his house he needs to make it up to the families of the suitors. He also has to make a sacrifice to Poseidon which is stated in book 11 on page 253 and lines 139-152. Once he has done all of those things then and only then I would be able to agree that the “force” is with him.

Throughout the entire book of “The Odyssey”, Odysseus has been through lots of struggles as he fought to get home. Joseph Campbell stated “The sense of fulfillment is extraordinary at that point”. That quote means that the heroic person reached their goal after they went through an extraordinary process of proceeding to get there. When we reached book 22 “Slaughter in The Hall”, Odysseus manages to kill all of the suitors and also redeem his wife, son, and palace back. In book 22 it says “But Odysseus aimed and shot Antonius in the the throat” (22.440.16). This quote tells us that the slaughter in the hall has began and that Odysseus is destroying the last obstacle in his way of reaching maturation. Once Odysseus kills all of the suitors and cleanses his palace so it can become a new start for him and his family “Bring me sulfur nurse to scour all this pollution-- bring me fire too, so I can fumigate the house”(22.454.508-509). This shows that him and his family have reached his maturation and has grown as a person after all his problems he has faced. When Joseph Campbell said “The force is truly with them.” relates to “The Odyssey” because after book 22 the gods were still by his side. In book 22 Athena still stays by their side when their fighting the suitors. It says “Athena sent the whole salvo wide of mark”(22.447.269). This quote shows that the force is with Odysseus and his family. Therefore “The Odyssey” relates to Joseph Campbell's theories and very much likely Odysseus is matured and has the force by his side.

I do think the “force” is truly with Odysseus. In Slaughter in the Halls I think Odysseus has fully matured. Odysseus had a hard journey and faced many obstacles. He did create some of the problems but conquered them in the end, mostly. In Slaughter in the Halls Odysseus fought the suitors, won his wife back, and got the palace back. After he kills the suitors he fumigates the palace so he can start fresh.(22,45-518-519) I think that shows that he has definalty matured. In the last paragraph of book 22 the maid went to get all the women and when they came back they hugged and thanked him. Before this in other books he was hiding from people and causing trouble with the gods now he has some what made peace. Therefore I do think he and Telemachus have matured.

Odysseus and Telemachus have two completely different roles in the book. Telemachus Odysseus' son is destine to find out what truly happened to his father and embarks on his own journey to find him. Odysseus on the other hand is eager to get to his home country, his kingdom. But every path he takes seems to lead him to encounter another problem. Surviving Scylla, and the Polyphemus are just small problems of a big picture. He encounters the lotus eaters that drug him into never wanting to go home, or at least lose focus of it for a long time. So that to me tells me Odysseus has earned the right to say he has the force. His son however I feel like he needs to develop and mature more before he has the privilege to say he is one with the force. Telemachus is young and needs to learn from his father more. another reason that he is not one with the force is Penelope wouldn't even let him take over the kingdoms needs, not even the maids. So that in itself shows me that he might not have the responsibility that is needed to make sure everything is in order. (22,452;448-452)

The books says, "But Odysseus aimed and shot Antinous square in the throat and the point went stbbing through the soft neck and clean out-" (22.11.440

The books says, "But Odysseus aimed and shot Antinous square in the throat and the point went stabbing through the soft neck and clean out-" (22.440.11-12). I think there was a lot of stuff that was realized at the end of this. There were many strengths that were shown. Especially with all of the action that went down. One thing I noticed is that even though Odysseus had many hardships he still made it and was a strong hero.
