In the book, The Hired Girl by Laura Schlitz, the protagonist Joan is treated miserably. She was on the farm with her dad and her 2 older brothers and was treated horribly by them. She would have to clean up after them and do all the housework while they did the farm work. Joan didn't mind doing all this except she was never paid for her work. Her dad took her education and friends away from her because he thought it caused a distraction to her. This part which took place at the beginning of the book relates to how women were treated during this time period. Women were treated as slaves and were told to raise kids and take care of the house whilst the men of the house would go out and work. Women were also considered as people who aren't really a part of the public so you would mainly see men outside and there weren't a lot of women spotted. This makes sense because, in the text, Joan was just treated as a slave not as a person until she ran away from her house. The experiences Joan had in the book do relate because most women were also treated poorly and they were given no money. Joan also had her education taken away from her because she had to focus on the farm. She had basically nothing except working as a slave for her dad and brothers.

In the book, Night by Elie Wiesel, the Jews were dehumanized by the Germans who came and took them away. People were taken to concentration camps and they experienced a lot of brutal things. I think this sort of relates to the book I read, The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz. Joan was also dehumanized by her own father because he took away her rights to be free. He took away her education and friends so she could do better work on the farm and not have to focus on anything else. She was only Fourteen and she shouldn't have had that happen to her. Although her experiences are very different to what the Jews experienced, they both did share the common theme of dehumanization. In my opinion, the Jews in the book Night went through more torture and more dehumanization but Joan has also gone through a lot herself. Having her mom pass away wasn't an easy thing for her but she is still trying to survive with her dad and brothers. These books are also different because she essentially got those rights back when she ran away from home and met the Rosenbach family. They kept her in their house as the Hired girl and even though she did the house work in this new place, she was allowed to be educated and she was allowed to read. She got what she deserved for working hard and she also got paid. The Jews in the other book however didn't get their rights back as they suffered and died on this horrifying journey in their life.

The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz is a book about a 14-year-old girl, Joan, who lives with her dad and her brother in a small town. She lost her mom when she was younger which took a toll on her and she always references everything to what her mom used to tell her. Joan eventually runs away from her hometown and goes to a big city where she has no money, no shelter, and she doesn't know who anyone is which makes things very difficult for her. Joan eventually gets a job as a hired girl and she ends up building strong connections with many people, feeling like her old self again, and feeling safe that she is away from her dad. This book explains that Joan shows character development throughout the book and she ends up making a better life for herself, which helps with pursuing her dreams.

This relates because in the book, it seems as if the dad is controlling Joan and as shown in the image, the man is controlling this girl. She has no freedom so I think this picture relates to the time period Joan was in. She was a hardworker with no freedom
