London chases down Salthook and drags the small town into the Gut.

Tom Natsworthy who is a young apprentice, admires one of the other characters Thaddeus Valentine.

Valentine pushes Tom off the city to keep his secret.

Thaddeus Valentine, a famous explorer and historian, returns to London with artifacts from the past. Tom is thrilled to see him in person and gets a chance to meet him.

Suddenly, a girl with a horribly scarred face, Hester Shaw, jumps out and tries to stab Valentine. Before she is caught, she shouts that he murdered her parents.

Hester escapes through the city's lower levels. Tom follows her and corners her, but she reveals that Valentine killed her parents and left her scarred. Tom is shocked and unsure what to believe.

After being pushed out of London, Tom finds himself stranded in the desolate Out country with Hester Shaw. The vast land is barren, with no city in sight.

Hester is focused on survival and revenge. She tells Tom that she must find London again to kill Valentine. Tom is still unsure whether to believe her.

The Out country are dangerous, filled with scavengers and other moving cities that might hunt them down. They must find food, shelter, and a way to survive.

Tom and Hester are spotted by a small, fast-moving traction town called Salthook. The town captures them, hoping to sell them for resources.

The people of Salthook seem friendly but desperate. They take Tom and Hester in, unsure of what to do with them.

A much larger predator city, believed to be London, appears on the horizon, hunting Salthook. The town is in immediate danger.

The massive predator city, London, catches up to Salthook and consumes it, leaving destruction in its wake.

Amongst the chaos, Tom and Hester manage to escape, avoiding capture or death.

Thaddeus Valentine, a high-ranking historian from London, is revealed to have a secret agenda and powerful influence.

Katherine, Valentine’s daughter, begins to sense that her father is hiding something, leading her to question his true intentions.

After being pushed off London by Thaddeus Valentine, Tom and Hester find themselves stranded in the "Out-Country," far from the safety of the city.

Hester Shaw tells Tom the story about how her parents died and how she has the scar on her face.

Finding out Thaddeus Valentine was the one who killed Hesters Parents because Hesters mom didn't want to give the machine (MEDUSA) that she found.
