Character I'm doing: Ptolemy

Born: 100 AD
Died: 170 AD

About Ptolemy: Ptolemy was not the first person to claim that the Earth was at the center of the solar system. He actually was supporting that claim. He even made a diagram about how the Earth is at the center of the solar system called the Ptolemaic System or Geocentric System. The diagram also told us that Ptolemy theorized that planets spun in a circle when they rotated Earth. Even though, he was incorrect, he still somehow managed to get the planets in the right space in the right time as of now. Ptolemy wasn't just interested in astronomy, he was also incest. He married his widowed half-sister and she gave birth to two children, Arsinoë (II) and Ptolemy (II).

What I think of them: To me it seems like he was extremely smart and he and from the paragraph above this sentence, he seemed like a generally good guy.

Status: Not only into astronomy, but also into incest.

Tycho Brahe
Tycho lived from 12/14/1546-10/24/1601
Tycho was an astronomer from Denmark and he was the creator of the tychonic system.
King Federick gave him Hven, an island for his research labatory and to develop a school.
Brahe lost a part of his nose in a sword fight against his cousin when he was 20.He developed a geocentric theory that imagined the sun and moon orbited the earth, but the other planets orbited the Sun.

Johannes Kepler
Mr.Kepler was an 1600s Astronomer. He had founded celestial mechanics and explained planetary motion.
Johannes was born December 27, 1571 and became an astronomer at the age of 22.He discovered three of the major laws of planetary motion.
One of Johannes quotes is “I much prefer the sharpest criticism of a single intelligent man to the thoughtless approval of the masses”(Kepler).

Caroline Herschel
She was an 1800's Astronomer who assisted in the finding the planet Uranus. She was the first woman to find a comet.
One of her brothers was William Herschel and he got all of the recognition. After many years and contributions to astronomy the king finally gave her a little recognition and let her be William's "assistant"
She was one of ten children.
She was a muscian traveling with William and caring for him. She ended up falling in love with astronomy.
I think that she was a rad hippie from her time.

William Herschel
(11-15-1738)-(8-25-1822)
He constructed the first large telescope.
In 1781 he discovered the planet Uranus. He mistaken it as a star at first but turned out to be a planet.
William often collaborated with his sister Caroline who was also an astronomer. They often traveled together.
William had 9 siblings. He was married to a woman by the name of Mary Baldwin Herschel and later on they had a child named john Baldwin.
A quote from William Herschel
“I have looked further into space than ever human being did before me. ..."

Clyde was an astronomer (Job) from the 1900's and he discovered Pluto in 1930 which then later was identified as the Kuiper Belt.
He also discovered a lot of asteroids(14).He also was interested in UFO.
His birthday was: 2/4/1906
He died:1/17/1997
He married:Patrica Edson Tombaugh.
He had 5 siblings:Charles Frederich Tombaugh, Robert Marvin Tombaugh,Esther Jane Tombaugh Spreen,Anita Rachel Tmbaugh,Ray Wilson Tombaugh.

Stephen Hawking
Birth date: 1-8-1942
Death date: 3- 14- 2018

Contribution to Astronomy:
What Hawking contributed to Astronomy is that in 1974 he discovered black holes Emit radiation that can be detected by "special instrumentation" and has the most detailed study on black holes. His discovery of the fact that black holes aren't entirely black and emit " Hawking Radiation". If something was dropped into a black hole, Would it be gone forever or would it come back up hidden in Hawking radiation? This shocked everyone and it's still a big question.

Life:
Stephan Hawking had a lot of professions. Some were astrophysicist, mathematician, Cosmologist, Theoretical Physicist, author ect. At the age of 21 he was diagnosed with ALS.
Hawking studied at University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and Trinity hall Cambride. He was an atheist.

Family:
He had three siblings; Edward, Philippa, and Mary Hawking. He had two wives: Jane Hawking and married 1965-1995. His second wife was Jane Mason married 1995 - 2006. He had three kids : Timothy, Robert, and Lucy Hawking.

What I think Hawking was like:
I think Hawking was a man that was always interested in space and wanted to learn more about how it worked. He wanted to understand the universe and why and how it exits.

Status:
"My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

Hipparchus
Date of Birth: 190 BC
Died: 120 BC
Hipparchus was a mathematician and a Greek astronomer. who made the fundamental contributions to the advancement of astronomy. and he was also the first to create a solar eclipses. he even calculated how far was the moon to earth was and it was approximately 63 times the Earths radius. i think that he was probably the best mathematician back then. and i also thought that this person was a nerd for being so smart. Hipparchus did not have children's. Hipparchus would studied at island of Rhodes.

what Cassini did was he helped discover the moons on Saturn.
he found out a lot things that would be deficit to find even with today's technology. He was very ahead of his time and for that NASA in 2017 made a space craft and named it the Cassini. I had never herd of him until this class now i am a big fan of what he discovered.

In 1672, Cassini and colleague Jean Richer used the parallax method to determine the distance of Mars from Earth, permitting the first estimations of the dimensions of the solar system. Using a method outlined by Galileo, Cassini was also the first to make successful measurements of longitude. Cassini made the first observations of four of Saturn's moons: Iapetus, Rhea, Tethys and Dione. In addition, he discovered the Cassini Division in the rings of Saturn in 1675. His name lives on today in the Cassini orbiter which has studied Saturn and its satellites since 2004.
