Pacing back and forth with the now cold cup of coffee in my hand, I stared at the dark grey walls in exasperation. It had been two days since my mother came in for her routine blood test, two days since she was checked into the hospital due to some abnormalities in her white blood count. Two days since the doctor has told me anything about my mother's condition, and i was anxious with worries.

'Mr. Tan? '

My heart beating frantically, i walked towards the direction of the voice, hoping to put a stop to my jittering nerves. I let out a relieved breath as I saw a man in a white coat, holding a clip board before him. Finally, a doctor! I exclaimed mentally. They had moved my mother to a different room this morning, and no one was answering my questions.

'Yes, i am.' I replied, clutching the paper cup tightly. 'Has there been a diagnosis ?' i questioned.

The doctor -- Dr wilson, based on his name tag, hesitated. ' Where's your father child ? '

Rolling my eyes, I sighed exasperatedly. Again and again
over the past three years, the same question echoed through countless memories. ' My father is dead, ' I recited the words that had been etched into my brain since that Sunday morning, my voice sounding monotonous and rehearsed even to my own ears. 'Tell me about my mother, please.'

Blinking, he nodded understandingly, before glancing down to the clipboard in his hand. Clearing his throat,he began. 'Your mother has an abnormal white blood cell count, it's way too high. Now this one of the symptoms of Leukemia.... ' Leukemia ? The word echoed through my brain, like my mind was an empty hall. I was frantic, I needed to talk to her badly...“What room is he in?” I screamed. Every word he spoke was one word less than I would be able to speak to my father. Dad could be dead in the next second and he was wasting my time!“Room 404, but—“. I didn’t wait for him to continue. Once I had what I needed, I was off, running through the walls that seemed to close in with every step that I took. 414, 410, 407…… The numbers whizzed pass me as thoughts flitted through my overloaded mind,. The door seemed to weigh a million tons as I pushed it open. Slow, heavy beats seemed to fill every corner of the private room, signalling her sleeping state. Kneeling beside her, I grasped her hand in both of mine., laughing faintly. “Mom,” I croaked, voice thick with emotion. Sniffling pathetically, I examined her closely. “Are you okay?”It was a stupid question. Even though i wasn't not a doctor, I could tell what the illness had done to her. “Fine,” It seemed as if she tried to give me a genuine smile. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be just fine.”Hot tears sprang down my eyes, flowing down on my cheeks uncontrollably. My mother who raised me alone, was a wonderful mother. A series of sharp knocks woke me in a jolt. Rubbing my eyes to rid them off any fatigue, I looked up and was greeted by Dr. Wilson. He held out a thin white envelope. “The test results are back.” He continued, but my brain didn’t register a word tumbling out of his mouth. Not looking up at him, I hesitantly took the envelope. Shaky hands slowly unfolded the envelope. With unbelieving eyes scanned the contents of the paper thoroughly again and again, Dr.Wilson confirmed. 'The tests were positive.'
