If those who either kept and hid away rations, by taking from the fields, or complained about conditions, were not lucky enough to be beaten or killed on the spot, they would instead be sent to detention camps, places of absolute horror. Their only use was for the most ruthless of the Khmer Rouge to viciously torture, and eventually kill those who broke the rules, or seemed to be incapable of being changed. If anyone was to oppose or go against what the Khmer Rouge wanted, they would be killed. Polarization in governments can be very dangerous because one side will refuse to see the points of the other side out of greed for power. The Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot refused to see the other side of the conflict and acknowledge that communism would not be the best condition for the country at that time. This is how dictators gain power; they kill anyone that appears as an obstacle in their path, instead of making compromises with the opposite side.
