Yet when Mr Birling talks about it he passes over it like it is nothing at one point describing a girl who just killed herself "wretched". But I don't understand why you should come here, Inspector – ". Builds on the theme that Mr Birling as a middle aged man is very "inpatient" and can get easily annoyed and grumpy. He's annoyed because he constantly feels victimised by the inspectors assumptions regarding Mr Birling 'being' part of an assassination.  Priestley emphasises his annoyance as Birling ends his speech mentioning the Inspector's name and uses the repetition of "Yes, yes" which can make the reader think he's trying to get rid of the inspectors constant questions.

The younger generation seems to listen to the inspector and are open and willing to change their attitudes whilst the older generations (Mr and Mrs Birling) hold this capitalist mindset throughout.

Here Eric interrupts and acknowledges that Mr Birling could partially be responsible however, he compares Eva Smith's death to something like a game of 'luck'

Inspector says “Sometimes, there isn’t as much difference as you think … I wouldn’t know where to draw the line”. Inspector suggests that even though no legal crime has been committed, they are guilty of a moral crime.

They belong to the upper class and are stereotypically expected to be respected in all ways and should not be questioned for their acts. The inspector does not really care if they belong to the upper class as he asks questions like 'why?' which puts off Arthur Birling as he does not expect such questions to be asked to him.
The inspector does not consider  their power over society and thats why he can be seen intimidating  them. He is quite imposing and intimidating and has the guts to interrupt in between the 'Birlings' speech, ' (cutting through, massively)'.  Despite of these points, he is not disrespectful towards them and is just solely doing his work not caring about the hierarchical differences.
