This question from the judge confused Arthur because he had never thought of the Junk Man as white or black.

still page 10: Arthur knew that peoples race wasn't something you messed around with. There were marches and protest about it on the television all the time and Arthur didn't really pay much attention to the news.
Arthur is now realizing that before the whole event he only thought of James as the Junk man. Arthur really didn't think anything else about him like his race or what goes on in his life, Arthur only thought of him as the Junk man. Now that Arthur knows that James is black he knows his actions could lead to another or more protest.
