It can potentially disrupt every area of mental functioning. People from all age groups and racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds can experience a dissociative disorder.     During childhood, ones self identity is still coming about, forming.  So at this time a child's limitation to one's ability to fully understand what is happening is not completely developed and is more susceptible to stepping outside of his or herself and view the trauma from an outsiders point of view, as if it weren't happening to them.  They use this as a coping mechanism as a response to the traumatic and stressful event throughout their lives.
    Even traumatic events such as wars, disasters, kidnapping, crime victim, torture, and medical procedures may develop these conditions in childhood and adulthood as a coping mechanism to escape the pain even if it for a short period of time.  But that lead to a problem when over time they start to separate themselves from reality and forget memories of entire periods of time.
