Day 2 Listening

Question 1-
Active listening skills in today’s session would be appropriate and useful in some of my classrooms. Because this form of listening conveys a mutual understanding between speaker and listener. Tasks should be appropriate to their level, age, and interest. For instance, today’s session which is about reporting the story can be used in my classrooms. I can add some pictures and some effect sounds to the story while I’m telling the story. And, at first, I can take their predictions about the story then they can write the questions. After that, one of the group members who is a reporter can tell the rest of the class their predictions and while they are listening to my story they can put tick whether they have a correct guess or not. I think it will be better in this way.

Question 2-
Listening for main ideas activities and listening for details activities are the sub-topics for a PDC meeting. They might be a useful focus. Because sometimes teachers or coursebooks do not give attention to these activities. Finding the appropriate title can be the gist activity and chart filling can be an activity for details. These activities have different purposes." What’s the subject of the passage? What’s the main point of the passage?" are the questions for gist, however; information gap activities for listening are for the details. We should separate each other for better understanding. These sub-topics can be an issue for PDC meetings.

Day 3 Speaking

Question 1
The most common problem in my district related to teaching speaking in language classes is lacking motivation to speak. Students should be encouraged to speak. They are afraid of mistakes and errors.

Question 2
The ideas and suggestions I have taken away from today can help me cope with that particular problem that is lacking motivation. Especially, holding competitions with small rewards (e.g. certificates, student/group of the week awards) for learners/groups that use the target language in a lesson) is a great idea for the solution. I’m already using rewards such as Exam Winners. I give a certificate to the most successful class after each exam. But, for the speaking problems, we should use more rewards so that they can be more eager to speak in English.

Question 1- Question 2

In teaching reading, we take into consideration the task level. Because, level of the text isn't important, it is the task that should be at the right level. We can arrange the task according to our students level. Morever, skimming, scanning and reading for details are significant parts of reading. We shouldn't skip any of these parts. Furthermore, for the post reading part we need to give a chance to students to produce something. Instruction checking questions are also important in reading skill too. We can pre-teach a couple of vocabularies before the text, taking prediction from students is also a good way of pre activity for reading. If we do this, we can solve some of the problem of teaching reading.

Question 1-2

In my local context, dictation activity, scrambled words (anagram), agony aunt can be used. These can be planed for especially writing skill. My colleagues can be interested in giving feedback. We can start the task in the classroom, but for the feedback sessions, students can give feedback to each other and also we should give feedbacks too. Drafts are useful for teaching writing. With these activities, we can show that writing is not boring. It has some fun if we add some fun activities like we did in the class. And it is a good idea to use outside of the classroom, it can be a corridor or school canteen. Morever, we can provide linguistic support for writing too. It can be on the walls or a couple of sentences in the text they are going to write. We can get help from some websites like Grammarly too for helping us to identify grammar or spelling errors easily.

Question 1-2-3

In grammar teaching, there are lots of things to consider especially the teaching method. There are deductive and inductive teaching methods. Both of them can be used. But inductive one is recommended. Context is the key factor of teaching grammar. Morever; form, meaning and function questions are significant. We should have these types of questions. Elicitation should be used. And, from controlled activities to not controlled ones, we should prepare different activities. These ideas are useful and appropriate in language classrooms. These ideas should be prioritized. Throwing each other ball and trying to retrieve the words from the category is the effective vocab. teaching activity in today's session. It has some competition to make it funnier.
