Contemporary Example Of Social Change

I chose the Black Lives Matter movement as an example of social change, because due to the police brutality that has been taking place for many years, the Black community has suffered for generations. It connects to the social movement theory where it focuses on quality of life issues. For example, police brutality is a negative quality of life (Social Movements and Change, 532).

This photo shows how the Black Lives Matter movement can be taken advantage of, resulting in a peaceful movement to look bad. This photo connects to the collective behavior "Mobs and Riots," in which crowds can turn into mobs by having a destructive goal in mind (Mobs And Riots, 529).

Structural-Functionalist Perspective: Modernity as a Mass Society

This photo represents how, in the past, people would have the same perspective and mentality on things, which explains the same mask on everyone's faces. However, due to an increase in population, it has caused social differences to take place social differences based on the media (The Mass Scale of Moden Life, 540).

Social-Conflict Perspective: Modernity as Class Society

This photo represents how the upper economic class always feeds off of the lower class in society, making the rich people's lives a lot easier. This relates to the "Class Society: Problems of Powerlessness" on how modernity has made life easier for privileged people, while others in the lower classes of the economy continue to struggle and survive (Class Society: Problems of Powerlessness, 544).

Based on this photo, there various factors that make us as individuals who we are, but becomes overwhelming. An example of this is society changing drastically as a new trend takes over the media. This concept relates to the Mass Society: Problems of Identity reading, where social change has made it harder to find identity (Mass Society: Problems of Identity, 542).

I've chosen this photo because it shows how modernity (the blue shirt person) has fallen due to their ambitions, and where postmodernity (the green shirt person) questions their motives. This relates to the first theme of postmodern thinking, where modernity has failed based on the tactics used to solve social problems (Postmodernity, 546).
