The bell symbolizes the loss of freedom. It also shows how it regulated everything and how they had to obey them.

Last Day
"The last day of the year. The word last had an odd ring to it. What if it really were the last day?" (Wiesel 66 blue book).

We believe last day is a motif. They are so used to hearing the last day, but will it be their last day? I don’t think they would mind if it were their last day. It would mark the last day of their suffering, pain, and fear. They could finally be liberated on their last day.

God
"I did not fast. First of all, to please my father who had forbidden me to do so. And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God's silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest
against Him. And I nibbled on my crust of bread. Deep inside me, I felt a great void opening." (Wiesel 69 blue book)

God shows up a lot in the book and in this chapter. Elie is losing the faith he held so dearly to himself as a young boy. That drive he had to further his relationship with God has disappeared. He no longer can obey God because he is angry at God for all the Jews suffering. Even though he was angry at God, he still felt a void opening inside him while he was disobeying God purposefully.

Loss of Faith
"AKIBA DRUMER HAS LEFT us, a victim of the selection...His eyes would suddenly go blank, leaving two gaping wounds, two wells of terror" (Wiesel 76 blue book)
"We promised: in three days, when we would see the smoke rising from the chimney, we would think of [Akiba]...There followed terrible days. We received more blows than food. The work was crushing. And three days after he left, we forgot to say Kaddish" (Wiesel 77, blue)

Wiesel shows loss of faith in many ways but he portrays loss of faith in Akiba the drummer because Akiba completely gave up. He had lost all hope and faith and gave up. He stopped fighting and he was slowly dying inside already before he was actually physically dying. He stopped showing emotions and started going blank.
