That is implied from page five first paragraph. The complex relationship between the author and the subject is that the author is trying to accept herself, but her past creeps up and holds her back. She is self continuous about the way she smell and her looks. Reminiscing about her past, she uses a poem like story to show her conflict with herself and how her past affects her. The use of diction, detail, and tone helps show the complex relationship she is facing with herself. 

The author creates a dreadful, anxiety filled, and frustration feeling on page 7. She describes the feeling of an anxiety attack; having her heart race, mouth dry, and unable to catch her breath, or either she was frustrated for the things that had happened to her; unable to change the past. Her purpose for creating that tone was to make it so the readers could understand how she is feeling or to get an idea on what’s on her mind. Page seven “domestic  tragedy ... your memory, vessel of your feelings” this implies that she feels trapped within herself  and is unable to understand what to do with herself and her feelings with her past. Her memories and past are the root of her problems, trapped only for her to suffer.  When being told how she had features  like a white person she felt a deep and uncomfortable feeling towards her appearance, this lingered with her up to adulthood, when mentioning it on page 5.

Due to the whole ordeal she is in a state of shock and later on passes herself, not just from her heart condition nor accepting her fate but also being done and giving up. Mrs. Mallard is motivated by her emotions towards her husband's death, but also her state of mind.

Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine, was the one who had to break the news to her; gentle as possible that her husband is diseased. Not many take it well, she wept
