Temperature at times takes part in this process when cold enough and hot enough temperatures force the rocks to expand and contract, therefore causing the rocks to crack and break apart. For my example, I am using a cracked sidewalk/driveway with a small weed growing through the crack. This is an example of mechanical weathering because although the physical properties have been altered, there was no change in the chemical composition.

These chemical reactions mostly take place when these materials come in contact with water and substances dissolved in it. For my at home example, I am using a rusted old meat smoker that has been sitting outside for quite some time and has been wet with hose water, pool water, and rain water.

I am using a pile of rock, sand, and stone that is located on the side area of my house as my example. Over time, this pile has been not only changed by the force of gravity but also weathered and broken down into a smaller pile due to outside forces, such as wind and rain.
