The European Union has economic sanctions against Russia. This started in 2014, against Russia's largest bank Sberbank. They also have economic sanctions against oil. This was in result of the corrupt government in Russia. Russia invaded the Ukrainian territory Crimean Peninsula and claimed it as its own. This caused Russia not to receive any imports or exports, the economy was falling drastically. As a result of this sanction, both trading parties were losing significant amounts of money. The EU is estimated to have lost over $100 billion dollars, and Russia lost over $600 billion dollars. Russians didn't have access to international goods, most things consumed or used had to have been produced locally. Since Russia was experiencing a recession, demand was low so prices for goods were low (including oil prices which were nosediving).

Caeden May

Country: North Korea

Year Embargoed: 1950s-Current

Reasoning for Sanction: The Unites States initially imposed sanctions in the 1950's and further tighten them in the 80's due to North Korea's bombing on South Korea. Which included the Rangoon bombing and the bombing of Korean Air Flight 858.

Effects of Sanctions: The targets of the sanctions are high ranking Korean officials but the working class of Korea is alos effected. Mainly children and seniors living in more remote areas of Korea. 200,000 North Korean children are suffering from malnutrition and sanctions put 60,000 of these kids at a risk of starvation. These sanctions also slow down the transportation of foods and medical supplies to NK, NGO reported it took over a year to ship 16 boxes of beans to NK.

Relevant Picture

Cuba- Rae Harrison
Emargo 1962
Reason for Embargo- In 1962 President John F. Kennedy placed an embargo on the trade with USA and Cuba as a result of actions taken by the Cuban Government which stay in place today. Cuba had relations with the USSR and started becoming a communist government so the USA started disassociating its trade with Cuba. The embargo was removed several times under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. As a result, it has become easier for Americans to legally enter Cuba, although travel is still restricted, and some American agriculture businesses are allowed to sell to Cuba. However, the U.S. economy is actually estimated to lose substantially more per year nearly $5 billion from the embargo. the much smaller economy of Cuba is estimated to lose approximately $685 million per year. Losses from possible American tourists, who travel to almost every other island in the Caribbean, causing most of it.
