1. Level of power possessed in the narrative:

The relative height of the person shows the level of power they possess. For example, HUang Liu-hung and Wang San are on the top of the hierarchy, whereas Hsi-liu's maids are at the bottom.

2. Class

Red represents state officials, yellow the elite (monetary and intellectual), purple if they were powerful but malicious actors who worked against the state, blue for special actors and green for the common people

3. Narrative:

The different narratives are arranged horizontally to differentiate the stories they inhabit in the book

From the William Rowe reading, emphasis was placed on the limits to state power, and how the magistrates were forced to rely on elaborate systems of local power-sharing, as well as corruption, in order to govern the region, as well as collect payment for their services. As a result, I placed these individuals high up on the power chain, with almost the same level as the magistrate himself. Furthermore, it sheds light on the different positions and power structures that acted locally, and described their relationship to the state.

I'm most unsure about the levels of power between different members of the elite, whether Hsi-liu's position would be lower or higher than her sons (in terms of power in the wider world, not necessarily within the household), and the relationship between the peasantry.
